Default Upgrade nav disk?

My dealer tells me the new upgraded nav disk they just got in will work in my '02 sc which has the original disk in it. Does anyone have experience with this or have done it They want $200 for it, any better $ out there? Thanks.

If you still have the original hardware, your system is the Gen 2/3 variety. Lexus comes out with a new
disc every year. Typically it's just updated maps ( sometimes it is updates to the operating system ).
If you use the navigation system and have had issues due to new roads and other highway changes,
then an update might be a good idea. If you are still using the 2002 disc, your maps are 12 years out
of date. One thing you will loose is the "Acknowledgment Hack". However, I have found most dealers
will install the new disc for around $169. It is a very DIY upgrade if you can find the correct disc for
your system online.

Be careful of online "bargains" though. If you see an offer that is too good to be true, it may be an illegitimate copy, which would be a violation of copyright laws. If you want something less expensive, older versions are on line. For example, a legitimate 2009 map disk can be bought for $30-$40 if you can live with 5 year old maps (better than 2002 though).

The update is very easy to do though. The DVD head unit is in your trunk. Just remove the old disk and reboot with the new one. Just like any other DVD drive.

A lot of 2002 owners have also updated the nav system to a version 4, which is direct plug and play for our cars. Also a very easy update, with better graphics.

Lots of threads on all of these topics.

Question? Looking to update my Gen 2/3 from 2.1 maps. Seeing newer Gen 2/3 maps on 2 discs, East & West. Will current system hold both discs or do you have to change them based on where you're traveling?
Thanks

The difference between east and west are local information like restaurants banks and motels. You get all of the roads with either version. You can buy both if you need them but they don't change significantly.

Thanks for the information! Makes sense.
Is the "override" limited to a certain version of maps for Gen 2/3 and how does one program the override?
Thanks

I purchased 13.1 maps for my Gen 2/3 today at local Lexus dealer & they installed it N/C.
Works great. Now, if I could only figure out how to be able to input info & changes while my wife is driving.
Thanks
