Default Beware: Cup holder can cause accidents...

A couple weeks ago, I was driving home from McDonald's with a fountain drink in the cup holder. As I made a sharp right turn into the street, the drink tipped out of the cup holder and I grabbed it fast, but not before I finished the turn...I almost crashed into the curb! Luckily I turned the wheel in time to barely avoid hurting my roadster, but it was pretty embarrassing!

So, for all those with 2003 SC430s, the cupholder is not as secure as it seems.

Close call! If you did get into an accident, you'd have to sue McD's for making their drink cups too top-heavy! LOL

Been brought up a few times over the years (car is 7 years old now). Most Lexus's do not have good cup holders, certainly not on par with other makes. This along with the older SC's are pretty rough in design execution. I only keep small (short) drinks in there.

I find that pretty funny, considering that the cupholders don't seem secure at all!

Even my wife's learned that, when we're in the car together, it's my job to drive, and her job to hold any drinks that might be in the cupholder!

I think "holder" is an overstatement, having spilled a McD's diet coke today.

Learned long time ago they're only good for "short" drinks(cup).
I had one flew onto the passenger's side mat years ago, luckily there was a lid and not much was spilled ...

My old ES had really crappy cupholders too. I called them "cupresters" instead because you still had to hold them when driving.

Maybe its Lexus's way of telling us to not induldge in huge-*** drinks. "Fat Americans" hahaha, I hear most cars in Europe dont have cupholders, and their "Large" is our small/medium. I always put an assisting hand on my large cups when cornering in my SC.

japanese car = japanese engineers
japanese engineers = japanese people
japanese people = smaller people
smaller people = smaller drinks
smaller drinks = smaller cup holders

it's all a matter of math

Easy Mod: I use a travel mug for coffee every morning, so I cut a quarter size piece of industrial strength Velcro for the bottom of the mug as well as the closest of the two cup holders. Works great never a spill.

YMMV

That would be a bit embarrassing to explain what caused the accident to police and insurance, but at least I'd make them laugh.

"Well I was heading into the turn and noticed that my tastey beverage began to list, it was then that I realized that my car's carpet was extremely parched and had my drink in mind. Because I absolutely could not allow that, I crashed my car to teach it a lesson"
