First, i am not 15... I just made up a b day cuz i only had one hand to type something in so i just scrolled the mouse...

Second, who said Gene doesnt believe me? He just wants to see two nice lex cars next to eachother.

I didnt think this would come up in a lex forum, maybe a bmw, but not a lex... and trust me, there mine... why would i lie? I dont know any of you so there is nothing for me to even show off...

This is much more than new coverage areas. It has to do with the gross inaccuracies in the present DVD. For example, an interchange on the Ohio Turnpike that has been there since May, 1997, is not shown on my 2001 GS 430 system.

POI's are also very unreliable.

shouldnt you be able to like download it or something cuz it does have an antenna so lexus could broadcast it or something like that.

I think what he's talking about is an "live" POI database that gets updated on a central server and then when you want to look up a POI on your Nav, the Nav would just download the information from the central server. Great concept, but logistically and financial prohibitive...

Personally, I think OnStar is the *****. It pisses me off that Lexus only offers it on the LS400...my friend has it in GMC Yukon...which costs less my GS430...why don't I have LexusLink? I wonder if I can add on OnStar...

OnStar isn't as "cool looking" as the Nav system but their info is more up to date, they can book stuff for you (concerts, dinner reservations, etc., etc.)...basically, a concierge...hell, you can even sit there and just bull***** with them on a long road trip...

Genearch ...

I agree that a navigation update would be foolish if the areas you travel have no significant changes. Now for the $64 question (ut oh ... I'm dating myself ) How do you find out what has been updated?

yeah thats what i meant, sort of put onstar in the lexus nav system or something like that, but what you said is what i meant. it just pisses me off that every dealer charges a diff. price... if theyre gonna charge you at all, charge everyone the same low price.

Default Backups are possible

I also looked at "backing-up" the Nav DVDs. A family member recently bought a 03 GX470. I have a 02 SC430. While a straight back-up copy is not possible with a consumer grade DVD5 (<5GB) DVD-R of the OEM DVD9 (<9GB) pressed disc, it is possible to to essentially delete the points of interest of regions that are far away from you. I deleted 9 of the 11 regions and burned a working back-up copy of v2.1. I even tried it in my 02 SC430 with success!

Good luck - I too am arguing with my dealer. We bought a 02 SC430 and an 02 LS430 last November. The SC has last years nav data, the LS this years. Been trying to get them to provide a free upgrade for the SC, but no luck so far.

Also, re making copies of existing discs - I looked into this thinking I could copy the discs from my LS and put them into the SC. Since the discs are multi-layer, takes a special burner to make them. What's available in the consumer world for DVD burners will not do it.

My dealer's reply was to provide one free update., Northside Lexus Houston. The larger problem is the service providing the mapping data is not keeping pace with development and changes. The 'current' update for the Houston area doesn't have roads and communities that have been around for five years. Additionally, there are roads and highways that are shown, but do not have block numbers. Some of these roads have been around for 30 years and are in heavily populated areas. This is my third Lexus, and I expect the NAV system to be as good as the rest of the car. It is not.
