Default OBD I problem sticky substance inside

Hello, I am having a check engine light and trac off light at the moment. Went to autozone to try and get the codes read. When I opened the diagnostic port in the engine bay, I found that it was gunked up with some sort of grey sticky substance. I have attached a picture to see if anyone has any idea what is going on.

any idea on how to clean? Is it possible? Should I just leave it?

That is dielectric grease and is actually there for a reason. It's applied from the factory to keep out moisture and prevent corrosion of the diagnostic terminals. It does not negatively affect using any inserted terminals or paper clips to run tests on the car.

You shouldn’t of been under there in the first place there’s nothing that AutoZone is going to read under that hood. Obd Port is under the drivers dash.

^^ Well there's nothing to read with a modern scanner for a 1992-1995 SC with its OBD1 port. Only 1996+ cars have a scanner readable OBD2 port and yes, that compatible port will be under the dash for the 96+ cars.

The OBD1 diagnostic ports both under the hood and under the dash on 1992-1995 SC's do not function the same way. For those model years you have to take a paperclip and jumper the TE1 and E1 terminals on the connector and look at the number of flashes of the Check Engine light on the dash to determine which code is being thrown.

Glossaries of common Toyota OBD1 CEL codes are available.

Na, my Snap-on scanner ran on my 92 great under the dash. I have a thread somewhere with pics. It read codes, showed engine rpm, pinged several areas of interest. Not as much control as OBD2, but mimicked it very well. Everything Autozone would be doing is under the dash.

there is a good description of what you can read from the port in the thread a few replies down and here’s some of the images i took of it reading off the obd1 port. I used to control the idle speed and everything. This is on my 1992

I was. It able to locate it. I looked and looked. I pulled back the carpet and couldn’t see where the port is located.
