Since I moved back in October of '22, my car was stored at my friends house. I picked it up in November '23 and had it towed over to my new home. I finally had a chance to start working on it about 3 weeks ago and it's been fun! My Garage Whifbitz Coil Packs failed incredibly (possibly because of dwell settings which weirdly changed when the ECU firmware was upgraded). They heated up, cracked, and smoke poured out of them.

I still had the OEM Hitachi R35 coil packs available and decided to give those a try by grabbing the new Platinum Racing Products coil bracket and stalks that allows them to fit under the crossover intake. One thing to note is that the bracket mounts three of the coil packs with the connector facing cylinder 1 and three of the coil packs with the connector facing cylinder 6. This made the swap more complicated because I had to extend the wires on my loom to accommodate three of the coil packs new orientation.

Got a new base tune loaded up, modified the parameters for the modifications that I've done, got the Fuel and Oil Pressure sensors configured in the ECU correctly so that they are read into the ECU and configured the Haltech GuageArt CAN Bus Gauge setup. Engine almost started yesterday on the base tune, but then the battery died. Will try again today since the battery has had a chance to charge up!

EDIT: Engine just started... WAY too much fuel in the base tune. Its dumping fuel from the tail pipe... Need to clean that up! Clutch sounds horrible when engaged. So a few things to clean up!

Sounds like you're well on your way - can't believe those coils failed so miserably, ha! New coils look great. Can't wait to see what this thing can put down with a clutch that doesn't slip!

Thanks guys!

My issue with excess fuel is the electronic timing. The Haltech doesn’t know where the engine is… will be adding cam sensors and deleting the distributor completely to make tuning easier.

Marcus,

Long time no talk. I hope all is well and the SC is running great.

I am curious which PRP coil bracket and stalks kit you have.

These are the choices i was confused on.

Bracket choices:
SKU JZCOILBRACKET-BLK
https://www.platinumracingproducts.c...toyota-1jz-2jz

SKU JZGECOILBRACKET-BLK
https://www.platinumracingproducts.c...2jzge-non-vvti

Stalks?
SKU US-JZ6
https://www.platinumracingproducts.c...-the-toyota-jz

Or did you do an entire kit?
SKU JZCOIL-SBRBLKNO
https://www.platinumracingproducts.c...jzge-non-turbo

Or did you install some other PRP item all together?

Thanks for the help.

Hey Bruce!

Here is the kit that I purchased:

https://www.platinumracingproducts.c...43067273085160

I purchased the stalks and bracket kit. I did not purchase the coils or the wiring harness from pro as I reused the harness from the Garage Whifbitz kit and I had previously purchased genuine Hitachi coil packs from RockAuto for $58 each (IGC0079). The price on those has gone down to $56 each as of today.

If I were purchasing the kit today, I would purchase the harness from PRP also because the coils don't all face the same direction when using the PRP kit, so I had to lengthen the wires on my GW harness.

I hope that helps!

Marcs,

This helps a lot. Thanks so much for getting back.

I appreciate the part number on the coils from Rock Auto too.

Take care.

Marcus,

I finally received my PRP coil kit.

You removed the OEM igniter from your setup with the HITACHI IGC0079 coils right?

I understand the HITACHI IGC0079 coils have built in igniters.

Hi Marcus,

What ECU are you running? Is it aftermarket? I am curious how you are providing Igniter Feedback (IGF) to the ECU?

Thanks,
Bruce

Hey Bruce, sorry for the SUPER late reply, I'm running Haltech Elite 2000. I do not remember running an igniter feedback wire to the ECU.

I'm now running the SupreVWorld Cam Sensor in addition to a VVTI Crank sensor. After setting the base crank angle in the Haltech ESP, the engine fired right up! I was able to move the car under its own power. It felt nice.

I'm currently working on the car in my very limited spare time, so it was very satisfying to get it running 😃
