Basically its an air scoop. Funny thing though, I thought I felt a little extra kick but after about 20 or so miles of driving the CEL came on with an EGR sensor code.
"Not enough exhaust emissions in intake"
Reset the code, took off the scoop, drove it to my parents' farm and back (70 or so miles).
No CEL.
So do you guys think the extra air being piped into the intake with enough velocity to jack with the EGR sensor? That's my theory anyhow.

Okey dokey, I put the scoop back in and did the ecu reset. we'll see if my commute triggers the CEL tomorrow.
I have a blower fan I can focus on the hole and you can definitely feel the air rushing in with your hand in the intake box. I doubt it'll really add more than a couple ponies but it sure would be nice if it helped the mpg's.
Have you thought about what will happen when water is taken into your air scoop?
I have. I can lift my BFI cover and slide in a little plate or remove the scoop without popping the hood. I designed it so that it can be removed and reinstalled in seconds
I've also tested it by shooting water at the scoop with the hose and coming straight on with lots of pressure the a couple little drops managed to get up there but nothing major.
I guess I could make a simulated rainstorm at highway speeds with a leaf blower and water hose
For hydrolock to occur enough water would have to be more than a fine mist. I'm not sure this would even make the filter damp in a full on rainstorm at highway speeds.
p.s. no CEL on the way to work this morning

i've heard and read a bit of the acetone stuff, i drove my parents car before i owned my SC400 so i didn't wanna do it, but this just reminded me so i'm gonna start trying it on the SC. i'll report back later after i get the car back to absolute tip top shape. currently in the process of replacing O2 sensors but one is pretty badly stuck and it's been raining all week.
