Overheating problems
Maybe it was cause it was cold (40 - 50 degrees out) but I changed the thermostat yesterday, and filled the whole system with water, I mean pulling hoses and dumping gallons of water in, even directly into the engine.
also bought a new radiator cap and the thermostat is a autozone generic.
also what is this?

it has broken into many pieces. and a couple times when overheated it was shot out of the hole (the center portion of this thing) with much steam coming out.
I want to get coolant in the system but not until I get this issue fixed so I am not throwing money in the trash.
either way I had heat out the heater before today, and now NOTHING my 2 hour commute was freezing. I stopped a couple times with the engine running and fed it more water.
I dont suppose my water pump went out? revving the engine I can see water fluctuating in the overflow.
I am really suprised with how long it has overheated to red and its still running great, I really dont want to have to push it anymore, specially since I just overheated and ruined my Previa van over the weekend as well, iron block and alum head and now that wont start at all I DONT WANT THAT TO HAPPEN TO MY SC400, help?

I think you just answered your own question.
That "million pieces plastic thing" is the temperature reader, somebody correct me if I'm wrong. Find a JY SC and grab that mechinism and swap it out for yours.

Did you check the oil to see if it is a coffee colored. If that is the case it may be a headgasket. Try the simple things first like new radiator cap, inspect radiator for cracks/leaks, you may also have air in the system. Good luck
mine was coffee colored! what does it mean, i thought it was just dirty? does a new cap really help?

but yea already new radiator cap and thermostat.
but the thing is the heat was working yesterday before I changed the thermostat.
drove all the way to work today (80 miles) with no issue of overheating, just frozen from the lack of heat.
A new cap is only necessary if your radiator is not holding pressure

SC lesson number 458: that 17MM bolt on top of the thermostat housing must be for burping the system of air, because as SOON as I opened that and revved the engine heat started coming out of my heater.
now I believe the car shouldnt overheat anymore, I have only been concerned about the lack of heat from the heater. heres hopen.
