I have a 96 SC400. Dougspeed has stated that all 92-97s were non-interference. However, while some threads say it has a non-interference motor, some say it has an interference motor. Can someone verify for certain which is the truth?

 

This is interesting...so the motor im building with BC 272 cams will then make the 2JZ interference?

 

The issue is the SC400 and the 1uz-fe not the 2jz. The original post was asking if a 93 SC400 engine was interference. It is a non-interference motor.

The issue remains for the 1996. Is the 96 SC400 with a 1uz-fe an interference motor?

I haven't seen actual proof either way, but I always assume the 96+ are interference on the 1uz. that's when the compression went up a hair till 98 when the vvti model came which is generally accepted as inteference.
95 is a grey area as some models like the ls400 got obd2 a little earlier (which supposedly came with the compression bump), but as for the 95 SC400 no one has said for sure I have heard examples of both ways.

Safest is to use a 92-94 motor for boost, and change your belt, tensioners and waterpump every 120k and life will go on.
