Engine Hoist Question
So I made the mistake of buying a hoist from Harbor Freight that was the 1 ton instead of the 2 - it wont pull from the front with the bumper on.
I thought about taking the bumper off, but is it possible to pull it from the side? I thought about using some chains to extend the leads off the leveler but it seems like it may swing the motor forward as soon as it gets loose from the mounts.

imo i would take off the bumper and lights too, it takes maybe 20 min. a lil extra time, more piece of mind that you wont mess up your stuff. i say go for it! dont forget to throw something over your fenders so they dont get scratched too!
The boom is plenty long enough. You aren't going to get that engine out with that much chain slack anyway with any lift so...........
Get that 4 feet of BS chain off the hoist and do it correctly with a short chain and the hook straight off the boom.

Even this is too much slack because I could have eliminated the chain to the hook, but I had the luxury of having my bumper off the parts car so I gave it some room. Notice the arm is slid all the way back, not out. There is no boom long enough with the kind of slack you have.

You can get it from the side. Take as much chain slack out before you start.
Maybe tape the inside of the strut towers so they dont get scratched.
Unless its on a decline the engine shouldn't just shoot forward much, but its good to have someone to help hold it or guide it out while you operate the lift.
make sure to use some grade 8 or 10.10 metric bolts to go through the chain at the engine lift points

I ended up replacing the rear chain on the leveler with a longer chain and using the one on the front to hook to the front hook so with the leveler it made it - barely, I and another person had to stand against the hoist to keep it from going into the front bumper. After we got it out (barely nicked the top of the condensor but got it out, it needed to be replaced anyways so I'm not too concerned) had to drop the car back on the ground and swing the hoist...all in all not the easiest motor swap I've ever done but also my first done in a driveway and not in a proper environment. Thanks for all the help guys, definitely made me think, I'll be taking the slack out of the chains to put the new motor in tomorrow..




Good job Tech. Had same issue three weeks ago. my front bumper was already crackled so it didn't matter if hoist rubbed a bit, I might have to get creative with putting it back in. I'm trying to search in CL what I can do now while the motor is out. You have any plans?....
Thanks, there was a LOT that I wanted to do to the motor and all parts while it was out, but due to the garage situation (my old room mates moved and I had to move my motor out of the garage ASAP that I was renting out) I had to make this happen over a weekend.

1 ton boom too short , our cars and supra must use 2 ton for if you compare boom reach between the 2 its a big enough diff to matter.. i pull a engine maybe twice a month and never ever have to remove bumper period .. i build sc's first and sec gen gs and do is300 and supras and never ever pulled a bumper and never scratched one either , why , because i use the 2 ton lift
Well you were right lexforlife, using a one ton from straight on is impossible it seems. Removal I guess I got lucky.
No worries though, like a freaking moron I didn't check the FSM and stuck the TQ Converter on the flexplate and sucked it in instead of putting it on the shaft inside the transmission and sticking it on the motor...in turn I rotated the crankshaft by hand and popped something inside the front pump.
Now to take that apart and see what I grenaded, I hope its just one of those two cog pieces that I see on Sewell. I guess now I'll get to clean everything more than I expected while awaiting the parts to come in.
That's the first RWD transmission I've stabbed my self, so I had a hunch I was doing it backwards...lesson learned, at the expense of my sanity and money. lol
