Pre 98's are a joke no real power difference between the two, 98+ is a different story!

It's interesting hearing these opinions. Almost makes me thing I'd be making a mistake going 97 5spd.
Has anyone actually had both (for more than just a test drive) who can give an opinion?

a SC400 will always make more power then an SC300. if you were to do the exact same mods to each, the 1uzfe will ALWAYS make more power...

only reason people think the sc300 is so much better is because of the readily available parts for it. Where as the 1uzfe parts are harder to find and 9 times outa 10 have to be custom made.

The 1uzfe is also a lighter motor

Although the 1uz is aluminum, it's 50lbs heavier than the iron 2J. As for the V8 making more power, of course the V8 will make more power stock for stock, but not by much if it's a pre vvti 1uz. I like the 1uz's don't get me wrong, I have one my self. However, the pre vvti version blows in stock form. Early 1uz's are only making 240hp, while 2J's are in the 220hp. Now put a 5spd 220hp vs a 240hp auto, I'm sure they will be close in final drive power. That is why I'm only talking about the vvti 1uz here.
Dollar for dollar, the 2J will out power an early 1uz, bottom line.

Oh yeah, I don't think 300's are better than 400's, I just wanted to know if anyone who actually has a 98+ would trade for a 97 5spd since it's a rare option.

I dont know where you got your numbers at but I can tell you they are wrong by a long shot.

I have PERSONALLY weighed the 1uzfe (minus fluids) and the 2zjge (minus fluids)

The 1uzfe was about 385 Lbs
2jzge comes in at right around 490

Also, my friend and I did some pulls with his sc300 5 speed, and my 1uzfe Auto, mine blew his out of the water. Both stock motors, with intakes that was it. Now cost effective? Sure if you have some one that throws 3,000 dollars and buys a turbo kit for the sc300 But has no idea how to fab up his own stuff then yeah, I guess you could consider the sc300 more cost effective in-terms of saving yourself the labor cost. But for that 3000 you spent on a already pre-made kit you easily could have made a crazy set up yourself and made More power with the 1uzfe.

depends! is it a power preference or a control preference. and its also about reliability no? cast iron vs alloy? 2j is gonna outlast the 400 i think. and manual is always going to be funner to drive.

I got the numbers back when I was shopping around for a suspension for my GS400, so I guess it's here say, but several vendors said the same thing. However, would you care to explain why the 400 is heavier over the 300? Check the specs!
Either way, you can boost a 2j for far less than 3k, common, you know better than that. Regardless, specs don't lie. Early 1uz only made 20 more hp over the 2j. Factor in the power robbing auto trans and what do you get? Besides, I know for a fact the 1uz has a way lower power handling over the 2J, and stuff is way more expensive for the v8, like I said, I have a 1uz, I've done my reserched. What it cost for me to make approx. 20-25 extra hp in my 1uz, I could have boosted my 97, but that's why I have the 1J SC for

You know, for a guy who claimed not to understand why people hate on 400's, you sure are hating on 300's.

Well this thread was not meant for bashing any SC, but 97 5spd rule> the rest droll JK's

2jz's definitely do not outlast the 1uz.

Early 1UZ's did NOT make 240hp. The myth comes from the retarded losses through the automatic transmission. Here is a FACTual dyno video of a rebuilt stock 1uz (92-94) in a MKIII Supra. 230whp and 250wtq with the only mods being a W58 swap and an exhaust. That is not 240 flywheel hp. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwA7JcNYhO4

Also, just because the 400 weighs more than the 300 doesn't mean the engine weighs more. If you want to argue facts then you are lost my friend.

And you know for a fact that the 1uz can't hang on power? These guys made pretty good power with it.

you could probably sell that rare 97 5speed and buy a 98+ 400 with some cash to space and btw 300>400
