Following the instructions from Blizzy (some V8 madness thread), I took a 3.26 diff and put in the LSD from a 3.76 diff. It is pretty straight forward. The only thing I did differently is I used a heat gun to warm up the ring gear to slip it in place. Worked great. Also I switched the side bearing races and carrier retainers to make sure the bearings were matched with the correct races and adjusting plate washers to keep the same tolerances. Since it is still snowing and we still have about a 3' snowpack I haven't put insurance on it yet so no real driving impressions. I did drive it from my neighbours shop home and was surprised that 1st and 2nd did not seem sluggish.

The LSD surgery post are the ones to look at in there.
The diffs are all the same, just different gear ratios or LSD/open diff, so the parts are interchangeable.
Blizzy went for more acceleration with the 4.27, I wanted some longer gears as going from the auto to the W58 shortened the gearing. With the 3.26 I get slightly longer gearing than with the stock auto, but I believe that acceleration will still be much quicker than with the auto slush box. Most of my driving is on the hwy so the longer gear will help at cruising speeds.

I will let you know how it goes as soon as the snow melts. I will also provide gps speeds at different rpm in the gears, and try to get some acceleration times. If it proves to be better than the auto, with decreased hwy cruising rpm, we would have a winner.
The math give the 5th gear a longer 2.55 ratio. The 1 to 1 ratio with the W58 is in 4th with a 3.26. The stock auto and 3.92 diff gives a 2.76 ratio. The 1 to 1 ratio with a auto is in 3rd with 3.92.
The proof in the pudding will be if the 1st-2nd-3rd-4th with the W58 and the 3.26 diff will give better acceleration that the original 1st-2nd-3rd in the auto with the stock 3.92 diff.
The thing is that you can do math all day long, but the telling is in the real world application and drivability.

I do have a richwood manifold and shaved M112 and all the needed stuff, but I want to see how things go. I was fully agreeing with you, until I drove it home from my neighbours shop. I did only use 1st and 2nd and was surprised that it definitely wasn't a slug. Only a good real world test will give us the straight goods. If I lived in a city, I would have kept the 3.76, but the closest city is 3 hours away, and I regularly drive the 11 hours to Vancouver, so longer gears keep the revs down.

 

I have been driving the car with the 3.26 diff for a few days. Hell this is the way the car should have been made. A W58 and the 3.26. Acceleration is crisp and it really moves along. On the hwy it is only at 2000 rpm at 60 mph in 5th. You can quickly move to 100 mph in 3rd gear no problem. Pulls strong. At this point I do not think I am going to bother with the supercharger. If I do not, I will likely sell it.
On a negative slant. I have developed the dreaded hesitation/stutter/bog. As with others if I unplug the MAF it goes away. I had not driven the car all winter. It was driving fine. I decided to wind it out. I took it up to 6000 in 1st, shifted to second and the hesitation started. No warning, just started to hesitate...

 

Bringing back an old thread with the stock w58 and 3.26 gearing.

Who here can speak on the driveability change negative or positive results?

I'm about to swap to a 6spd JDM 3.26 diff and I don't want to make the car a slug but I would like better highway cruising RPM's for mpg and longer gears.

I am thinking about doing the same since I am having a hard time finding an auto tt diff....I may end up shelling out the extra cash for 6 spd diff

 

you may or may not need the drivers axle. supposedly there is a length difference of a hair, but I have heard of people using the stock axles and people swapping one. if you are drag racing the car, I would probably change the axle at the same time also when using an actual 6 speed diff just to be safe.

 

I got 6spd axles! Yeah I read about that.

 

If you get it done before I do let me know how the gearing is with the w58....

What about with 3.13 gearing from USDM

 

3.26 with R154 here. Close enough )

It's definitely fine for daily use. GREAT on highway speeds. Might be more difficult with a light flywheel but its great otherwise.

 

Thanks but the r154 has longer gears than w58 fyi.....
