You must do a proper retrofit first.

Default Recharge with 134A?

Shops will tell you this is okay, but a R12 system will never be as efficient with R134. Also, the lube is a different base type, and a complete flush is near impossible. The seals are not compatible, either. Find some R12 and keep it in there as long as you can.

If it's possible, you should start selling this to guys in the states. There are a million kinds of older enthusiast cars with R12 systems who would jump at that opportunity. You could make a killing, assuming you could get it across the border without legal issues or impounds or whatever.

The R12a is everywhere up here. You can buy a can for $16 bucks or the whole kit ( 2 cans, the hose with guage and an adaptor to go on the unit for $54) I don't understand why it's not in the States. It indicates that it envro. friendly and I can't see the Canadian Gov. allowing it if it was like the old stuff. I'll get the name of it for yea. Maybe they have a web sight.

Get yourself a side tapper with a 1/2 ACME fitting and tap into some dust-off cans. Its the same stuff as R-134 for about .15 an oz. R12a (RedTek) is not R-12. Its just Propane (R290) and Butane (R600) both are non-ozone depleting. Also R-12 compressors and systems that use Viton seals are not R-134 safe. I use torch propane all the time (R290 is pure propane, $$$ Reefer truck refrigerant) on a slow leak system cause I was sick of paying $26 a bottle for R134 here in Cal. Cut the R134 end off a filler bottle (cut with gauge) and splice it to a propane torch head. itll charge teh system enough to get compressor moving and it will cool too. yoo can use it to find leaks too, just use its pressure to find bubbles when you spray joints with soapy water. Believe it or not its hardly flammable even with a major leak because there is really not alot in there. When was the last time you had a live flame in your car next to am A/C fitting? R-134 is just as flammable (as in its not in this application). R134 is somewhat controlled here, but those dust-off cans contain the same stuff and there are $3 for 14oz here.
