Default Rear Spring And Strut Install

Hey guys, i have a 93 black 5sp sc300 and today i really busted my chops installing the fronts with GR2s and Espelir ASD springs. The front is great but i honestly am having a hard time doing the rears. I searched the forum and couldnt find anything specific to the rears. I checked out Raines guide but that guide misses so many specifics for the rears. I am one person doing the whole thing and so far, i cant seem to get the rear springs installed. Spring compressor is garbage since it makes the spring want to go lopsided and there is barely clearance for two of them to keep them straight on the spring. There are alot of linkages connecting the rear control arms but what would i disconnect to make this whole thing easier. Thanks in advance.

i just installed the rears today and it was a PITA..the lexus book i have didn't even show any other way to take it off...the way i took it off was by first of course taking off the wheels, caliper, unbolting the bolt that is on the bottom of the strut then loosening the 3 nuts inside the trunk..then i unbolted the top bolt on of the tie rod(i think it's the tie rod?) then stand on the rotors putting all my weight on it so it goes down and have my brother help me force that POS out..took me 2 hours for one side and 30 minutes on the other..hope this help, good luck!

p.s. putting the strut/spring back on is even worst , i recommend you having a friend or someone help you do this or both parts...

Yeah i totally believe that. I w3ent through the fronts in about 2 hours then spent 2 hours JUST on the right rear strut. Of course i am just by myself and i could see that a friend would definately help on this. It really isnt that complex but all we need is for the lower control arm to be more flexible and go down just another inch or so and BOOM it would be in so fast. I will tackle the last one tomorrow and see what happens but i am sure i will bust some more knuckles just to get it. I figured taking the caliper off would be so helpful.

If you disconnect the swaybar in the rear then it's pretty straight forward.

Undoing the swaybar links can be a PITA though but you only need to undo one of the four ends.

Matt.

i got a long thick pole and leveraged it on the framing. then i had someone leverage it down while i took out the whole shock assemble. pretty easy after that. GL.

rears are the some of the easiest shosk you can do. they only other car i have done that was easier then the Sc for the rear shocks is a an EVO8/9.

you dont need to do anything speacial in the rear. you dont have to take apart any suspension arms or breaks. you take off the wheels. take off the 3 nuts int he trunk. unbolt the shock from the lower control arm. then take a big breaker bar and pull down on the spindle assembly. it will drop the whole thing and will let you slide the fork looking bottom part of the shop away from the lower control arm. then you just take out the whole shock/spring assembly.

it took me about 2 hours to do all 4 corners on my car. the rears only took about 30 mins.....on the floor on jackstands. the front of our cars is more time consuming.

a bilstein coilover setup for the evo took 1.5 hours to take off all the stock stuff and install all coilovers. and the rear required removal of the lower control arm.

our cars are really easy to do suspension on. if you truly want to have "fun" installing suspension try a 2000 Audi A4. those german pieces of chit are total crap.

Then you missed this absolutely perfect thread on your exact problem. Cant get my rear struts out!

Each rear assembly can be done by one person in about twenty minutes if you use the scissor-jack or bottle-jack method.

Agreed x2, though I haven't done others, the SC rears were very fast with the right technique.

The rears took about a 3rd of the time that the fronts did!

Try having someone stand on rotor while you pull it out, they should pretty much just come right out!

Hope this helps!
