Question shift lock?!?!

okay done my searching and seen other threads with similar or exactly the same problem. but as yet have not seen a solid fix on any of them so i resurrect..... i have a 92sc4 and the brake lights dont work anymore. figured i shorted something because there was water in the tail light and wires were open and corrosion is all over the light sockets on R tail light. well anyways, brake lights are ALL GONE, shift lock doesnt disengage anymore, no more little click when i push on the brake, and i checked EVERY fuse in the kick panel and under the hood, none are blown, still have turn signals and reverse, just no parking or brake lights in the rear.... anyone out there that can walk me through this?

Check to make sure ALL the harnesses are plugged in completely. Check for pinched wires or broken wires.

well i have a feeling my tail light pigtail is shot on the right side... could that cause an incomplete connection hence preventing ANYTHING associated with it to work? probably gonna go get a pigtail from the junkyard tomorrow... see if that helps it... and the shift lock prevents the vehicle from shifting out of park without the brake pedal being depressed... kinda useless if someone decides to just push the shift lock release button.

check the little button on the back of the brake pedal assembly,
it gets depressed when you push the brake down, like the clutch one kinda.

if it brakes you can have all of those symptoms pretty much,
but usually its a reverse switch, which means if its broken your lights will be constantly on as a warning (id your lights arent shorted out like yours).
at least it worked like that on my 240sx. mine was a 5 spd but im pretty sure if that switch isnt aligned up right you wont be able to shift out of park

not sure about the sc but i would check it out cause of the shift lock thing.

okay already checked the button attached to the brake pedal. it seems to be in working order visually, but i dont know if maybe the internals are shot. anyone got the resistances of it or test procedures for it? someone who owns a FSM? damn i need to buy one of those!!!!

as far as i know thats the only thing that operates the shift lock.
you can try grounding the wire going to it and seeing if yo can shift.
unless its backwards then you need a 9v signal, i bet its the ground though.

yes but which wire do i ground? there are four wires going into that plug..... one of which is the infamous green wire u use for setting up remote starts..... had that wired in and was figuring that might be the problem, but when i disconnect it, it still doesnt work... and my remote start still works.... so should i try grounding the green wire? or is it a different wire i need to ground?

you're talking about this switch right?

i dunno why there would be 4 wires going to it or remote start.
what would remote start have to do with the brake?

one of the wires should be ground anyways (black probably), so if you do have the right switch there are really only 3 possibilities. tempted to run to my car but its freezing outside.

yes that wire BUT I THINK there are four wires running into that switch,,,,, i think... but if u follow it out it runs to a box, then another harness down ,,, that is where the green wire is.... i use the green wire to run into the remote start, so if someone gets in my car with it started, as soon as they push on the brake, the car shuts off. to prevent theft,

interesting, after-market alarms and remote starts really start to complicate things. if that wire is connected and you do the remote start thing and the brake shuts your car off, i would assume the switch works fine then.

no now for some reason it doesnt work... so i assumed it might be the alarm, but if i disconnect the wire from the brake switch, it still has the same issues. i took it loose last night, and without a voltmeter its kinda difficult to get everything figured out, but it seems as if there is no power going to the system anymore. does anyone have a picture of the fuse panel diagram and maybe a wiring diagram or instructions on where the power comes from before it hits the brake switch.

your alarm will need that wire to be connected.
its hard to help you without seeing any of it,
but if i had to guess i think your switch is busted.

you should start with fixing the tails though,
as it needs to be done or more stuff will go bad.
