Putting it into gear has no noises. Its when I move forward for the first time after being in reverse, when I press on brakes i hear a click/clunk. After that, anytime i move forward it doesnt make a noise.

Then when I need to do a revese (after going forward then braking), the frist time I brake in reverse to stop, it clicks/clunks. then it wont do that again.



My pads are shifting or something.

They are alright, I was wondering if I can just replace the shims? I dont want to buy new brakes til I get new wheels (bbk).

Would I have to do new pads too?

 

I'd guess that it's the transmission mount, not the brakes.

 

it ~could~ be brakes, but thats not shims if it is, it's the pad hardware, the spring loaded pieces that hold the pad in place that go on the caliper... if it's the brakes, its nothing to worry about, and is actually documented in the owners manual...

but, it could be a loose control arm bushing... before I changed mine, I had this same clunk, and it turns out the right front lower control arm rear bushing had taken a poop, and it was clunking, but only when shifting from reverse to forwards or vice versa...

 

Man that could be the whole caliper moving-- I'd yank the wheels off to be sure -- just check the torque on the main caliper bolts-- maybe check the caliper pins for play too-- big flathead helps there--

It could also be an upper bushing with slop-- but it would probably present this problem under braking after accelerating-- and under acceleration after braking -- so I'm thinking more toward the brakes--

Trans mount is another thought-- along with motor mounts----

I would realistically check the trans mount first-- then the other stuff--

 

I don't believe it is the brakes either.
My guess would be anything from worn ball joints, worn bushings, etc.
These items wear out over time...and when they do, there is slack in the suspension...causing "clunking" noises.

so its definetly brakes right?

 

no, because the hand brake only affects the rear suspension... I would bet its the front suspension if anything...

 

I would go with Mitsuguy. I have had this noise in the past and it has always worked out to be bushings. Loose bolt once.

The advice to check the caliper bolt tightness is perfect and too easy to ignore. I'll do mine in the morning.

I will put my car on a lift at a friends shop. His has a drive on type lift. While I move the car back and forth and hit the brakes he will stand under the car and scope out the noise. When he finds it we switch places and we each verify what is making noise. Find a shop that has this kind of lift and give the guy a few dollars to trouble shoot you problem. I doubt he will let you "drive" but the money will be well spent. My Lex dealer will diagnose anything for an hours service charge. That is the best money I have ever given a mech.

It's the brakes. my SC does this all the time when I reverse and brake forward. Basically the pads shifting when you brake in reverse then forward.

 

its not the mounts, the car is vibrate free.

how can u stop the pads from shifting?
