Default Fuel level gauge problem..

Hey guys. I currently have a problem with my fuel level gauge.

When the tank is full, the gauge reads full- just like it's supposed to. When the tank is half full, the gauge reads exactly that- half full. When it's at 1/4 full, it reads 1/4 full.

BUT then anything below that, the needle still stays at 1/4 on the gauge. When I;m really low on fuel, the gas light turns on.. but the gauge is STILL reading 1/4 full.

I removed and re-installed the fuel level floater unit thing a few weeks ago.. and this problem occured after that. Is there any way to re calibrate or reset the gauge, or the sending unit inside the fuel tank? Could there be something in the way in the fuel tank?

Any comments or suggestions would be great. Thanks,

Allen

There are several components to the system. The float has a sensor that creates a resistance which controls the signal to the gauge. The gauge functions off the signal, but the gauge itself is complicated with both electrical and mechanical moving parts (top and bottom springs).

mine just will sometime stop working.. its most likley your sending unit. but go to the tank and hit the sending unit and see if that helps

ok if i take out the actual unit and move the floater to the EMPTY position, the needle on the gauge does exactly that- it moves to EMPTY. Wierd.

Do you think there may be something in the way of the sending unit, preventing the floater from dropping below 1/4 tank? if this is true, then how could the gas light turn on? I'm confused.

Or, maybe I somehow bent the unit out of it's proper shape when I removed it a couple weeks ago?

Well then you just said what your problem was..... the floater is not going DOWN.

How will the low gas light turn on though, if the floater is stuck at 1/4 full ?

I bought a new float from Aliga.. should have it early next week. Hopefully that fixes my issue. I'm pretty sure I probably just bent the old one out of shape or something.

Is there any special way to re-install this thing? Any steps in resetting or re calibrating the gauge or unit prior to turning on the car? Any help would be great. Hopefully this is a quick fix. Any advice would be great, thanks.

Sorry to bring back such an old thread, but that's what happens when you search instead of just making a new thread. On my gauge cluster, not only does my needle sit and mostly just stay at the bottom, but it's not lit up either. Is the fuel gauge on my cluster messed up or is it the sending unit or both?

Every now and then (well..2-3 times in the year I've had the car) when I put gas in I'll notice the needle move up to 1/4 tank, but within 50 miles or so it's back down at the bottom.

There are 5 screws on the back of the gauge that control both aspects. Make sure they are tight. That's the easiest way to find out if you have two big problems or one small one.
