Default Electrical door problems?

I just bought a 92 SC 400 with 176k miles.

Have a question about the door controls

Mainly, the controls on the driver's side door don't work at all. Power windows/mirrors all that good stuff is dead right now. However, the previous owner jimmy rigged another switch onto the door (which is hideous) to open and close the driver's side window but only when the door is open.

The power locks work perfectly, and the power window on the passenger side works fine if controlled by the passenger side switch.

Pretty much the driver's side controls seems fried at this point

I was thinking it might just be the wiring harness or will I have to replace the entire control panel?

Thanks for any help!

Hey man,

There is absolutely no reason why you would have to replace the whole door panel. All it sounds like you need is a new harness or switch. Pull your door panel off and take a look down there. Buy yourself a light tester and start checking it out.

Good luck,
Jonny

Thumbs up Pink Wire

It’s not anything in the door itself. I had a SC400 with the same problem. It is a thick Pink wire that runs through the boot between the door and the car. Because of the way the SC's door opens out, it causes substantial wear on this wire and eventually breaks it. All you need to do is to splice or soldier in a small wire to replace the broken wire in the door.

It’s fairly hard to get into that boot and fix, I paid a Car Stereo shop to do it for me.

Cost me $50.00

update, i took off the switch plate and took it apart. it looked alright however i was testing it out and i noticed the driver's side switch doesn't make that clicking sound anymore. Going to try to replace the whole thing and then see what else is wrong from there.

The wires attached to the harness didn't look in the best of shape either, they had lost some of their rubber covering so will need to fix that with some electrical tape to see if there's a short

I'm in the same boat, basically cleaned up the old switch, that didn't work, took it to Lexus of Portland. I told them that it's most likely the wire harness. They told me that it needs a new switch, paid $147 for that, installed it myself, and still nothing. So, I'm going to hunt for this infamous "pink wire" using my test light as suggested....

This is a good thread. It's funny how this just started happening to me as well. First, it would do it sometimes, then the window won't go down at all. I was so mad, I wanted to run my car off a cliff....but I still have the weekends off, so I'll be tackling this problem this weekend. I will dismantle everything.....we'll see who's the tough guy now....

Well, I ended up taking it to lexus, as replacing the switch wasn't the answer and a waste of money. Basically someone had messed with the wiring in the door before I bought the car, they had to rerun a new ground wire as the wire was severed in the door harness. I wasn't about to mess with it, but I'm sure for most people it's either the switch or a severed wire in the door harness.

On mine, I could push on the harness in the door jam and the window would work fine, so that's how I narrowed it down.

I have a similar problem except my power door locks don't work. They click like they are trying to close or open and then nothing!

Got any ideas?

wow this thread was brought back from the dead.

I actually got my switches to work again. There's a power wire that gets brittle over the years and breaks in the door jamb, I think it was a thick pink one? Well, I replaced it and my windows worked fine. However, my mirrors still don't work but I heard that might be from the ecu. I care more about my windows anyways.

This is most likely the problem, if not that then check the switch. I bought another switch and tried my luck to no avail. Changing the wire is hassle but you can always take it to a stereo shop and pay them to do it.

Hope this helps

Since everyone is throwing their door probs out, i have only one prob. The passenger window doesnt like to come down when i press the down button on the drivers side switch. It works normally on the passenger one though. Also heres another interesting thing. If i repeatedly press it on the drivers side, eventually it will come down. Thinking it might be a loose wire?

i'm thinking about taking it to a stereo shop and see if they can help me.. what exactly should i tell them? will they find the wire themselves? and where's a good place to go to?
