I lost my only key to my 1995 factory manual sc300 and the car has been sitting for about 5-6 months. I recently paid a guy to come out and cut out a new key for me (he told me that the key did not need to be chipped in order to start). Come to my surprise the car in fact does not start, only cranks. The battery is new, everything seems to be working as it should except I do not hear the fuel pump working.
So what is the correct answer? Does the 1995 model need a chip in the key? There are some people that say that the transponders were implemented in 1995, and others saying 1997? Even the Lexus dealer told me that it did not need a chip.
If you have a key that can engage the starter you should be good to go; no chip is needed in a key to start these cars. The transmitter in the original keys were only for the door locks.
Sitting for 5-6 months is not good for any vehicle. If the fuel pump is not coming on then there are a host of issues to chase down. Even bad gas can be a culprit.
