They brought the price down significantly. Now they have to go further and price it at $49.99. LOL

 

I don't know if that's a "significant" price drop, as the $169 does not include installation.

Last year, I paid $199 installed for the 10.1 update.

 

That sucks. Good thing I didn't get the nav, got a garmin years ago with a lifetime update of $90.

What changed other than maps?

 

Yeah, I don't think anything really changes with the interface. I've got my eye on the garmin 3400. That navi looks VERY sexy and would look great on the windshield of my LS, but it's going to make the OEM nav screen look like crap when they are both on . The feautres of the garmin are insane.

 

You can log on to www.lexusnavigation.com and on one of the top tabs you can see all the changes and additions to the mapping. They are significant and even some small changes to the Canada mapping. I hope to get this update while in Mesa over the winter months. I know that the features and mapping on my portable Garmin, with the lifetime updates are probably superior to the Lexus GPS, however it is nice to have the big screen. I still use the garmin for roads or areas that aren't covered by the Lexus gps.
Too bad we can't get these updates for a more reasonable price!!!

just called johnson lexus (raleigh/durham) & they charge ~$60 labor for nav update

 

Folks, if you have a Lexus that still uses the Disc drive for updates, you can do this yourself very simply and save yourself 60 dollars. If you can switch discs in your stereo you can do this. It's not open heart surgery. Don't waste your money.

 

Just posted elsewhere that I'd go for an aftermarket nav like Garmin or Tom Tom because you aren't locked into the technology. Not only can you update maps quarterly at low cost or free, you can replace the instrument itself for maybe 10% of the OEM installation. Garmin is easily ten years ahead of the Lexus Nav. With phone apps like Google Maps, the dedicated in-car GPS may be on its way out unless automakers go open source on the technology.

 

The Gen III models starting with 2010 do not work that way. They 'have' to be done at the dealer with a coded flash drive. And depending on the connection speed of the tech's laptop it can take quite a while. Lexus has pretty good control of this now. Unless Lexus Corp comps it, there is a cost to the dealer plus the labor.

It's best to keep good relations with your dealer. If they give it to you themselves, they're eating the cost.

 

I'll have to see if my dealer will comp the labor cost when I'm there next month for service. I've been going to them long enough. If not, I'll pass even though it's considerably less than it used to be. I haven't updated the nav on any of my RXs before, why start now.

 

Anita...if you can sweet talk them into comping the labour, You may have to accompany some of us to our local dealers. Are you busy for the next two months???
Glad they brought the price down though. When you see all the great gps units on the market, it makes you think should I spend the money on the update fee or just buy the latest Garmin with a lifetime update package for about 1/2 the price of our update.

I dont find the updates very useful myself seeing as how Cali, especially in the bay area, is pretty much completed in terms of infrastructure. I dont really see myself driving cross country either.

But that being said, I can see the appeal of free updates from portable navs, but I dont see myself getting one for multiple reasons. I dont want to see anything on my dash or windshield. I like seamless integration of certain things in OEM nav systems, and almost 100% of the time, the dash of a vehicle with nav looks better than the dash of the non nav counterpart.
