I assume only a dealership can install the NAV upgrades to the hard disk in the newer vehicles.

I asked about the nav update when I was getting the RX serviced. It's still pricing at $169 plus installation. My SA checked and found out it doesn't change the appearance, just POI and street changes. She wouldn't let me get it. I'll wait another year or two.

Guess I'm a bit of an odd duck,

I like getting updates. Not thrilled about the cost, but seems in line with the DVD updates of my previous car and I had fours years of those and made sure the new owner got them in case there was ever a problem. Probably didn't matter after installing each update, as some included firmware updates.

If I take a trip, just hope the nav makes decisions based on the latest information.

Not expecting a different look till the next generation of RX as we're probably stuck with a low resolution screen(?) and crummy graphics processor(?).

I think, can always be wrong, they look up the destination I request in the "phonebook" and plug that address in to my GPS/Nav and my GPS/Nav still does the routing. At least it seems that way when I have multiple destinations set and they can plug in an additional destination in whatever order I ask and it seems my GPS/Nav does routing adjustments. Like I said, I may be wrong.

I'm sure Enform will work on an old nav version. What are the chances the destination will be on a new road? They could probably find something nearby to send you to if that happens. And they'll have the latest POIs.

David, I wanted the update too, first time ever on any of the RXs I've had. But my SA was adamant about not getting it yet. She hasn't updated the nav on her RXs either. We've both managed fine without it.

Anita, you are correct Enform will work with an old nav and old maps. You're also right there aren't any new roads, probably not many.

If I take a trip through five states and there are 30 changes per state in the new nav software and my journey benefits by one of those changes, is it worth the $277? No. Will it ever worth it? Don't know. That's the risk I'm taking. Not sure how my SA would know what is best for me in this particular matter. I know my little burg in the middle of a cornfield isn't gonna get mapped any better, nor do I need it. It's the world outside my realm that matters. Touchless car washes, where are the touchless car washes?

Besides I enjoy being the only one in town with the update

If you enter the hidden service menu, there is an option in there to load an update via USB. I'm assuming that's for the Nav map updates. You can buy a USB key from Sewell with the latest maps, so it looks like it's possible to save any installation charge - who's going to try it out and report back???

You can't. I watched it being done on mine. The tech has to use his 'shop' laptop and connect with a server somewhere to load it. They've got it foolproof I assume to protect themselves from piracy.
