Intermittent wipers stop working
Well what can we do about it? We could all register complaints at their 800 number, but at this point they must know that all cars have this problem.
I've had rain sensing wipers on various cars for over 20 years. Haven't seen any improvement in their performance in that time. Now, having low expectations, the ones on my 350h work as well/bad as any other.
These days without a class action lawsuit, unless its a NHTSA issue where they are subject to mandate and government oversight, many car manufacturers simply don't do recalls anymore due to cost. You see the same thing across almost every car forum, known problems for which fixes never seem to materialize or are just pushed back on the customer as "it's your problem".
1.5 years after purchasing my 350h Luxury, the local dealership I purchased my car came through and delivered a fix. I was expecting empty promises but yesterday they replaced the motor assembly. I live in the PNW and it’s been raining the past 24 hours. The rain sensing wipers was sensitive as it should have been. I wanted to share it to those who found this issue as a nuisance since it has been frustrating, for me at least since it rains a lot where I live. Now, go get your wipers fixed!

We use a car wash soap with wax (inexpensive, from WallyWorld) and the drops bead up and flow over the glass. Probably the same wash soap that commercial car washes use, as they like to 'blow' the water off the car before final drying.
Sometimes that inhibits wipers as the sensor can't 'see' the rain. But we can't see enough drops to inhibit our view forward.
You need a particular sequence to generate the problem. Two patterns I see - it's raining, and then the rain lets up for a while, the wipers slow down. The rain then picks up, the wipers don't follow by going faster and you have to turn them off, then on, to resume. Second pattern - you start adjusting the sensitivity setting during a rainy drive, up then down then up, eventually the wipers get confused and give up tracking your setting.
