Draw the shifter to the left and the Dash display with change from "D" to "M4" or M1" and show your

BSM displays the yellow icon in the outside mirror without a tone when a car is behind and beside
you at speeds above 15 mph. No need for a warning while stopped in traffic. The same system
provides Rear Cross Traffic Alert when you are in reverse (at any speed) and does add a
chime to the mirror illumination. The RCTA range can be as much as 65 feet if the oncoming
car is moving quickly (manual says 18 mph) .
Solid icon when they are in the zone, if you put on your turn signal to that side it goes
to a blink rate faster than the turn signal. The difference between the sound of the turn
signal and the visual of the yellow icon is very attention grabbing and should encourage
you to glance at the mirror...
i don't think it's a bad design necessarily. There are other times the BSM will flash. For example, if you're in a double turn lane with your blinker on and the light turns green. You start moving and the cars next to you start moving. You aren't changing lanes, but BSM doesn't know that. Would you want an audio alert bugging the crap out of you every time you do that? No....I didn't think so. It'd be nice if it could read your mind and could tell if you were about to change lanes or not, but it can't, so I'll live with it flashing at me.

I am pretty sure my Mercedes and Porsche both had an audible BSM alert so they were able to work it out and I never remember it driving me crazy.
