Default P0500

I hoping to get some guidance. I have a check engine, check awd, trac off. A scan gives me p0500. When I reset, it comes right back on after a few seconds of driving.

I've checked abs sensors via techstream and all 4 work properly, as does speedometer. I get 0mph vehicle speed in techstream.

I've tried tracing all the wiring via diagrams I've found online, but come up blank with the tcm. Does the F Sport 8 speed trans have a different tcm? I don't have the black box and only a connector straight into tranny.

I was hoping somoen could provide guidance or the tis troubleshooting steps for my particular model. I've been following sienna, highlander etc.

Here is the connector im assuming is for the tcm.

Here all the data is good from.abs.

I'm looking for any and all advice before I resort to dealership visit. Thanks!

Don't go to the dealer. They will overcharge and probably sell you something you don't need.
Try a good independent shop that specializes in Japanese imports. This link is a good place to start to find a great repair shop, then cross check any possibilities on yelp or google.

I don't actually plan on dealership, as I've heard horror stories of throwing modules at it until it's fixed. I'm really hoping for TIS printout for my specific car to make sure I'm troubleshooting properly.

I'm more than capable of doing the troubleshooting, just need to make sure I have the proper contacts and wires for tracing purposes.

You're getting P0500 code, so start by checking the vehicle speed sensor, it may be bad. Both the ABS system and the AWD system need a valid speed data, so it makes sense that a bad speed indication would trigger both lights.

All the TIS troubleshooting trees ive seen for similar models state that if the odometer works, then the sensor is good. From my understanding, the mpg is calculated from the four abs sensors, then sent to the abs mod, then to the combination meter, then converted to a square wave to the TCM. I get the proper mph from the abs sensors per my screenshot above. I just need the proper troublehsooting to see if it really is the same as a highlander, sienna etc.

How many miles are on it? What model year?
You have the 8 speed you said.
Does it have the VSS inside the transmission like I think it is on the 6 speed?
Have you ever had your transmission fluid changed?

  • *1: This vehicle speed sensor signal is created by the skid control ECU. There is no actual component that is referred to as the vehicle speed sensor. In addition, for some other systems, vehicle speed information may be exchanged using CAN communication.
I broke down and paid for the 2 day subscription. I've gotten somewhere. The first step in the troubleshooting is to check the voltage at the +S contact of the harness going to the combination meter (odometer). Should be between 4.5-14 volts. I was constantly at 2.5-3.0 volts, which warrants throwing a code.

While I had the meter connected, I was playing with the harness and noticed it would spike up the proper voltages. Now I'm fairly certain that there is a short or broken wire, just have to take the time to rip more apart to check properly.

Good luck and keep us posted on what you discover. Those broken wires can be tough to finally locate. Took me the better part of a week last September to find one that was throwing a code pointing to the evaporative system's canister close valve in my wife's 2006 Jaguar XK8.

Squirrels, rats and mice are known to gnaw on wiring and nest in various places. Look for evidence of infestation. Many have had problems related to chewed wiring. Usually, it is the injector wiring.
