steering column rattling DIY?
The rattling noise is gone, but my steering wheel auto tilt is not working
He didn't have much time to deal with it today before I'd like to drive it back and I made an appointment next Tuesday. Do you know the possible cause of this issue? When I hit the tilt button, it will make a clicking sound once and then nothing will happen, and the steering wheel will not move. But I can still drive with it though.First time I have ever joined an online car forum, and apologies if missed some basic etiquette for first ever post.
But I am hoping for other 3rd gen owners' opinion on an issue I’m experiencing with my 2015 Lexus RX350 (approximately 144,000 km). I purchased the vehicle used just a year ago (off an actual Lexus dealership, so all maintenance was up to date then).
I've seen numerous threads about steering wheel noise (including this one), but not sure if my particular circumstance is different, or if it's the start of what a lot of Lexus owners have ultimately ended up with.
I’ve noticed a clicking or ratcheting noise when turning the steering wheel, but ONLY when the turn signal is engaged. The noise is noticeably louder when the left turn signal is on versus the right. When the turn signal is not engaged, the steering wheel turns smoothly and quietly with no abnormal noise.
I’ve done some research on Lexus steering wheel noise issues online, but most of the cases I’ve found report noise occurring regardless of turn signal use. In my case, the noise is exclusively present when the turn signal is engaged, which makes me unsure whether this is a known or normal characteristic for this model/year, or if it indicates a mechanical issue.
I’ve attached a short video that captures the issue clearly:
- At the beginning of the video, I turn the steering wheel side to side without the turn signal engaged — no abnormal noise is present.
- I then engage the left turn signal and turn the steering wheel side to side — a clicking/ratcheting noise can be heard.
- When the steering wheel is turned far enough for the turn signal to cancel automatically, the stalk returns to neutral as expected, and the noise stops.
- I repeat this sequence once more in the video with the same results.
I can’t say with certainty whether this noise has been present since the time of purchase, but I wanted to check whether this behavior is considered normal for this vehicle or if it may require inspection or repair.
I’ve been really enjoying the vehicle overall (my first Lexus) and am hopeful this is a minor, fixable issue. I appreciate any insight you’re able to provide.
Kind regards,

Search on CarGurus.com or cars.com for used ones near to you.
IF it does and this was my vehicle I would have the turn signal stalk controller replaced. Try one of the online discount Lexus parts places or eBay for a used one. The steering wheel has to be removed, so you have to be careful of the airbag. Get estimates from some local body shops to do this work. Their hourly rate is much less than the dealer or mechanical repair shops and this is the type of work they do all the time.
Here is a new one on eBay for $100 US.

Does anyone have a diagram of how this bracket is attached?
