Great video. I always use jack stands. Are floor jacks safe to use without jack stands?

 

Jack stands are better. If I were putting more than my hand under I would have used some.

 

He also thought that Lexus spec was 5,000 miles on the oil when it is 10,000. I got the impression he would change oil every 5,000 regardless.

 

I have been doing my own maintenance for many years and would never get under a car with just a floor jack holding it up. I have had them fail, usually by slowly lowering the car. But you never know.
I also think his method of using 4 floor jacks to lift it up is overkill and expensive. I have 2 floor jacks. One goes in the center front where there is a jack point in between the 2 he uses and in the rear I use the differential or tow hitch. Jack stands can be placed on the sides where the factory jack fits on the reinforced pinch weld. I usually leave the floor jacks in place unless they are in the way.

I would not reuse the oil drain gasket when you can buy 10 of them on eBay for $6.49

My printed owners manual calls for 5k oil changed rx350 2012. Also the dash reminder comes up about every 5k.

So where do you get 10k for a 2012 rx350?

 

If I put a jack center, front, how do I get at the oil filter (I am not a double jointed)?

Two jacks in the back is safer/more balanced than one on the diff.

I do agree on jack stands, see my previous post, but we can also beat it to death if anyone else want's to post on that.

Just to be fair though, what are the odds of all four floor jacks failing totally and the exact same instant?

The odds are about the same as being attacked by a black bear, a brown bear, and a polar bear on the same day.

If any one goes down (even fast) the truck remains up on the other three. Try it and post a video.

Lexus recommends changing the oil every 5K if you drive primarily on dusty roads, take short trips in below freezing temperatures, or drive at low speeds for extended times. And originally it was 5K for 2010 models. But they changed it back in February 2010 to every 10K or 1 year, whichever comes first. That was the big switch over to synthetic. The list for the 35K service is on page 52 here. What hasn't changed (not sure for later model RXs), the change oil light coming on every 5K miles. At least that can be reset.

 

There is a service every 5K miles but an oil change every 10K. The 5K service is rotate tires and inspect.

 

The 5K service light is just to get you in to the dealer so they can make more money. You can get your tires rotated at the local gas station for much less, although you won't get free donuts and coffee while watching a big screen TV. With their charges for tire rotation, it is probably fine to rotate them every 10k at the oil change. Save the difference for buying new tires. (I do try to rotate mine at 5k, but do it myself)

I acknowledge the chance of failure is small, but I would hate to have even one floor jack fail if it is holding up a corner. Jack stands are cheap and reliable insurance. Since I just changed the oil last month, it will be almost a year before I do it again and take any photos. We will all have forgotten about this by then.

At 43 - 45 seconds In your video in the upper left corner you can see the rounded center piece to place a floor jack in front. It protrudes down a bit. You lift it up with the floor jack, then place the jack stands on each side behind the wheels, then lower the vehicle and remove the floor jack. Then you have nothing in the way. The oil filter and pan are on the passenger side anyway.
Same with the rear, lift it up, place jack stands then lower it.

I'll stick with 5k OCI and I do agree with anyone who says it's overkill, but it only costs me $25 for oem filter & full syn oil (Walmart jug price) and it gets me a chance to inspect everything. This one is going to my daughter when my wife is done with it so what the heck.

For tires I do not want to go 10k on a rotation especially with fwd vehicle so I sort of like my intervals, the tire rotation also (as you see) lets me inspect brakes & more.

As for the drain plug gasket, it's metal. I guess I could wear my shorts once & toss them out rather than launder them, but I use them over too. To each his own, I rely a lot on my common sense approach & decades of experience on many makes & models.

Bought a 96 Buick a few years back from an old lady. The car had 18,000 miles on it. Her service records show that she changed the oil every 1,000 miles. Her dealer I'm sure loved her.If someone wants to spend the $$ for too many PM's thats better than one that gets neglected.
