I yanked apart our cargo area to install more sound deadening mat.
What I found was an assortment of black plastic boxes and a large aluminum heat sink.
Can someone please identify these items -- my instincts tell me not to cover them up?
Will it be safe for me to cover the various rubber plugs in the cargo floor?

 

The first black plastic box is the air chamber that makes up the sub. It's attached to it and is all one unit.

The second one is a vent. I covered up the left hand sided one (behind the sub) as part of increasing sound deadening, and no issues.

Not sure about the heat sink though that one I would not cover up.

 

Thanks -- perhaps I won't cover up the sub's air chamber just in case someone needs access to it later.

Do you recall how detailed you were in covering the cargo area with 'Dynamat'? -- were all the metal channel cutouts bridged with mat, ? How about dealing with myriad of rubber bushings and plugs that dot the cargo floor...?

 

You do not need complete coverage for Dynamat-Raamat to work. The goal is to cover enough area so the metal no longer vibrates as much. Just cover the metal, as much as you can easily reach. Even sticking a small piece into a crevice you can barely reach inside the fender can help.

It does not need to overlap, although that may help. You do not need to cover the plugs etc. You will have enough coverage just covering the metal.

Did you see any of the test videos where they hit a piece of metal and it rings, then they place a bit of dynamat etc over part of it and when they strike it all you hear is a low dull thud. Same effect on your car.

 

Just wondering does the rear area emit that much NVH? It always feels the noise comes from higher points in the car.

Good question -- seems to me that most of the annoyance is coming from the rear cargo area.
Perhaps the large cargo area acts as a 'speaker' for the rear noise??

After that area has been remediated, I may move to other locations as they become apparent.
