Question Maintenance question

need 15000 mile svc now. oil changed at 10000 so do not need that done. will have 15 k done at my pvt mechanic.
question is, the dealer next svc recommendation is listed at 30k. what about the need to change oil at 20 k? dealer says MOC additive at 15k svc is performed. is that supposed to extend the oil change to skip all the way to 30k? i do not see a 20k recommendation in brocure i god from dealer. i do not know much about MOC other than it is added at 15k service .

The oil is supposed to be changed at 10K, 20K, and so forth with 0w20w synthetic. No additives are recommended. If I were you, I'd have the 'dealer' change it now to get it on record and then start again at 20k on 10k intervals as per your maintenance manual. Have you looked in it?

Since the oil was changed at 10K, you are already on schedule per the owners manual. I would not go 15K between oil changes even with a MOC additive. I would stick with the owners manual recs of 10K, 20K, 30K (or sooner). I personally change the oil every 5K even though it is 0W-20 synthetic, but I plan on keeping the car a long time. If you only keep the car 4 or 5 years, i would stick to the owner manual recs of every 10K.

Since i drive a lot I change my oil every 7,500 miles. I bring my own oil (mobile 1 full syn 0w20 and oem filter) I purchased used last April with 21k miles and the owner before had all the services performed at a lexus dealership and according to the service manual. I skipped the 30K service and will be doing my 60K at the dealership soon. Have about 4k to go.

Maybe the dealership is referring to the MOA oil additive from BG products, If so, you don't need it.

Probably the folks in Clearwater, correct?

Forget about the additives and just get regular oil changes as discussed in your Owner's Manual. You can even take to a local Toyota shop for the Express Lube Service. Same oils and filters for a whole lot less money.

I would skip questionable oil additives. Synthetics do not need as many additives as conventional oils, which wear them out, so there may be little benefit to these. I have never seen such a service recommended in the manual.

FYI - dealers get paid to use MOC stuff. So, if you're paying out of your pocket for this service, you're being taken for a ride.

Never perform an X miles service at the dealer. Each dealer has their own recommended set of tasks to perform, depending on how greedy they are. Owners manual, as well as LexusDrivers.com has a list of factory-recommended maintenance.

Thank all of you very much. I am very clear now on procedure and agree about dealer overpriced interval service. I have a great and honest mechanic and service man outside of lexus dealer. I used him for my acura suv for years. Everything was 1/3-1/2 the cost with him and he talked me out of some things acura wanted to do and told me to wait. Brakes for example were fine.........lex said need new for example.
What about warrantee? If i keep records of svc at my mechanic will that work?

Yes, all you need is written records that the service was performed somewhere. The federal Magnusson-Moss warranty act allows you to get your car serviced anywhere and prohibits dealer's claiming a monopoly on service to maintain the warranty.

Services performed outside of a Lexus dealer can be entered in the Lexus owners' website manually. I did that when I changed my tires last year and had an alignment done. Just keep the receipts as proof.
