I bought a used 2013 Lexus RX 350 F sport. In auto transmission car jerks when switching gears from 1st to 2nd and to 3rd. The problem goes away when I drive in manual. Also I noticed the jerks severity depends on how much pressure I apply on gas pedal. When I gradually apply pressure on the gas pedal, car does not jerk as much compared to when I apply more pressure. Jerk is more severe under ECO mode. When I turn ECO off, jerk is less severe. I am planning on taking the car to Lexus dealership to see if they can fix it with in a reasonably price. Until then if anyone has any recommendations
Has the ATF ever been changed? I would do a series of three simple ATF drain-and-fills as a first step. Very easy DIY job and there are plenty of instructions here on the forum regarding exactly how to do the procedure.
Actually i bought this car used and i dunno , but it seems no . I dont find any records for this in carfax and mychanic also told me that it is sealed transmision.
but now it has 115000 miles , i afraid that when i drain and refill to cause harmful ! As its high millage and never changed before ? What do you think…
A simple drain and fill will not hurt it as you are only changing about 1/3 of the fluid. It will refresh the fluid and improve performance and help longevity. Even a fluid exchange may not hurt anything, but you never know given your driving issues with this particular transmission.
Some Lexus and Toyota dealers will refuse to change the transmission fluid touting the company line that it is sealed for life (which is complete BS) and some will eagerly rush to perform this valuable service (because it is a good income source and helps prolong the life of the vehicle). If your Lexus dealer refuses, call around to another Lexus or Toyota dealer or local Transmission shop that is familiar with the Toyota 8 speed automatic. Many members take their Lexus vehicles to Toyota dealers for service as they share the same engines and transmissions. I have done it myself.
You have (I think) the 8 speed transmission which was a new product in 2013 and they had some issues with early models that resulted in issuing some software updates via Technical Service Bulletins by Lexus a few years later.
This question about the 8 speed has popped up a few times recently here and on other CL forums. Part of your complaint is just that that is somewhat the nature of the 8 speed.
A Lexus dealer can advise if there are any software updates for this vehicle that need to be performed based upon your VIN.
You can go to this US Department of Transportation, National Highway Safety & Traffic Administration web site link, (NHTSA) and enter your VIN or license plate to search for recalls and technical service bulletins which I recall they list as manufacturer communications or similar. You may be able to learn more about transmission updates there. https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls
Yes 8 speed and lots of people faced that and i dunno how they solved , but how come i facethis on automatic but nothing happened at manual ? If it fluid ? And is it recommended to change filter also now at first time or just drain and refill and change filter later ?
It is software programming. They rushed the transmission out before it was fully ready. There were a lot of complaints about rough shifting, hunting for gears, about it being non responsive to the gas pedal or in the wrong gears etc.
That is why they had several software updates over the next few years, to fix those complaints about the transmission shift behavior.
When you shift it manually you are over riding the computer software that tells it when or when not to shift and thus it enters each gear as quickly as you push or pull the shifter. Take it to a Lexus dealer to have the software updated. And ask about changing the fluid.
As AI explains:
Common complaints regarding the 2013 Toyota 8-speed automatic transmission include: hesitation when accelerating, improper shifting at high mileage, occasional slipping, and sensitivity to transmission fluid level, with some owners noting that the transmission can feel sluggish or "hunt" for gears, particularly at low speeds; this can sometimes be addressed with a software update depending on the specific vehicle model.
Key points about the 2013 Toyota 8-speed automatic complaints:
Shifting issues:
Some owners report that the transmission can hesitate or delay when accelerating, especially at lower speeds, and may not shift smoothly at higher mileage.
Fluid level sensitivity:
Proper transmission fluid level is critical for the 8-speed automatic, with issues like rough shifting or noise potentially arising if the fluid level is not precise.
"Hunting" behavior:
Some drivers notice the transmission seemingly searching for the optimal gear, leading to a slightly jerky driving experience.
Potential for software updates:
Depending on the vehicle model, a software update might be available to address some transmission concerns related to shifting logic

Did you get Toyota WS ATF?
I use Idemitsu TLS-LV in my 3 Lexus & Toyota vehicles as it is a full synthetic direct replacement for WS at a better price.
Idemitsu TLS-LV
Engineered for and meets requirements of Toyota/Lexus/Scion Automatic Transmission with WS specifications
Optimized viscosity and advanced friction-reducing additive technology
Precisely engineered frictional characteristics guarantee smooth shifting and outstanding anti-shudder performance
Excellent resistance to oxidation and thermal breakdown provides long fluid life and extended protection
Provides superior deposit control and protects metal surfaces from rust and corrosion
Exceptional wear protection of gears and bearings
Excellent seal compatibility and conditioning reduces risk of fluid leaks due to seal shrinkage, hardening and cracking
Yes i bought Lexus ATF WS FROM POUHANKA. And darined old at mechanic shop
Be sure to use the Toyota wild weird tran fill procedure when you put new fluid back. if that was my tranny, I'd drain and refill 10 times!! well, at least 4.
i will drain and refill again but i want to keep it like 1-2 weeks and drain again its is the first drain after 115000 miles and not recommended to strip the old one suddenly
