Thanks for the input and suggestions. I don't think any of the review mirror kits I've ever used suggested sanding, but probably not a bad idea though
Each time I've done this I've applied pressure, used tape across the bracket to keep pressure on for 24 hours. However, I never thought of trying that using a dowel etc. Also a good suggestion. I'll definitely try that next time.

Currently it's been in the 20's here the past week so I haven't tried reattaching it yet.
