The past couple of weeks, I've been noticing a bad smell when the air conditioner was running. I finally got around to looking for it. Fortunately, it was easy to find: I pulled out the cabin air filter, and on top of it and jammed into the duct above it was a rat's nest and about 8 dead baby rats.
I cleaned it all out and replaced the filter, and the smell is gone. However, I'm now wondering just how in the hell they got in there in the first place. If I'm correct, the cabin air intake is under the hood, just forward of the windshield - and well screened, with the screens firmly attached.
How could the rats have gotten in there to build the nest?
It could be worse! I read once about a pilot who took off from Texas in a small airplane. Halfway to his destination, he noticed the head of a snake sticking up from the steering wheel shaft. He tried to get it and was, of course, bit on the hand. Luckily, after landing he found out is was a non-poisonous snake. Apparently it climbed up the wheel well when the plane was parked on the ramp.

Hint: thorough preflight inspection. (Yes, I own an airplane, too.)
Put some "Bounce" dryer sheets around. Stuff them behind boxes and any place you can. Mice and rodents don't like the smell and will go over to your neighbor's garage. Yes, it works.
