Sludge is NOT visible from the oil filler cap, that's just old oil crud which is normal build-up. Sludge is however visible if you take off the valve covers.
Very true- That's granite deposited by the combination of refined dinosaur fat and HIGH crankcase heat. The baffle is very close to the opening where the oil goes in and that's all you can see is baffle covered with "granitized" deposit. I cleaned that off in my DIL's RX and believe me it seems like it's been there since the dinosaurs deposited it.
