Default Replacement Master Remote Key Question

Hi Guys,

I need to buy a replacement Master Remote Key for my 02 RX300.
I called a local Dealership here in Toronto Canada and he said it costs $350 plus taxes.

Does this sound right to you?

I had to buy a remote key for my benz and it only cost $250 and the key was much more high tech than this thing...

Any suggestions or recommendations where I can get the replacement key for much cheaper?

Thanks

We went through our local Toyota dealer and got a master key for my wifes' RX for $125. You can buy them on E-Bay, Lexus parts dealers on the web. Just do a Google search for it, and you will find dozens of places to get them much cheaper than what you were quoted.

There are 2 things to purchase and 2 processing steps. The total price depends upon what you buy and what you want done.

1. Key blank [oem vs after market]
2. Cutting the key [personalization ... keep in mind the dealer may refuse to cut non oem key blank].
3. Electronics [the remote part]
4. Programming the electronics.

For all 4, the rice quoted to you by dealer seems very good. [imho]

sparecarkeys.com is one of many online sites where you can get a complete remote key cut to your vin for less than $150. It comes with simple steps to program it to your car.
This assumes you have a working master key which is needed for the programming process.

Yes it does. That's why it's called a complete remote key as opposed to a remote key shell. If you don't need the electronics you can get a key shell cut to your VIN for less than $50 and load your electronics in. In that scenario, you don't even need to program the key.

Sewell Parts Online charges the same for a shell with no electronics and they cut at no additional cost.

Has anyone living here in Toronto Canada had to deal with this key issue?
Can you let me know how you did it?

I want to know if anyone here in Toronto has programmed their own Remote Key using their own master remote key.... If you still know how to do this, I'd be willing to pay you to help program my key.

I'm in Oakville. Just went through something similar - didn't lose mine but the bottons on the remote stopped working.

I bought a master remote from ebay for ~$90 CAD. Rather than pay someone to program the key to the ECU, I pulled the old and new remotes apart and switched the guts. I also switched the "chip" that was already programed for the ignition. Then I went through the steps to program the locks - which is easy to do. No need to recut the key.

If I could have found somewhere to just buy the inner guts I would have.

Note: this only works if you still have the original key.

Default I'm in Toronto too....

Bought Ebay key blank($10). Had it cut at a locksmith near Dufferin and Lawrence/Eglington (only one in city, as Lexus won't help) for $30. Programming is easy. If you need any more help PM me your number...

OK, here is what I did:

Purchased an uncut keyless entry remote from "lockyourcar" on ebay. Basically this was to get me the remote guts. He includes a new uncut blank, but I didn't want to deal with locksmiths. He includes all programming instructions for the remote. Make sure you match the FCC ID# from the back of your working remote to the one you are buying. The remotes being sold are used, but have been tested and a new battery installed. For my 2000 RX the FCC ID# was NI4TMTX-1. Be careful, it is possible that yours could be different.

I then purchased "Lexus Key Remote Shell ES RX LS LX GS GX" with cutting Included from "rocket-keys" on ebay. I supplied the key code on the small silver tag. His instructions regarding the key code state:
1) Check the Owners manual for the small metal "key" tag. Also the black Emergency Key holder may have it imprinted into it.

2) The passenger door lock has it stamped on it. If there is no passenger door lock, then try the drivers door lock - it will have it. You have to remove the door lock from the car to see it.

3) Try calling the dealer, ask for "parts" dept, ask them to look it up on their computer. You might have to whine a wee bit.

You can also take a good clear digital picture of the key blade that I can cut the key from.
When I got both, I just popped the remote guts out of the keyless remote purchased and installed them in the new remote shell.

After programming I now have two master keys again and a spare cut key.
