Default Lock button on Remote

The remote control that I use for my RX works perfectly when trying to unlock. But when i try to lock it sometimes the RX wont lock. I am sure its the remote because the light on the remote doesn't come on when i press the lock button. But does when i press the unlock. Also remember the lock button does work but sometimes it wont like 2/3 tries it wont. So i think it's just the contacts in the remote. Does anybody know how to clean them, or any other solution rather than spend $70 on a key from ebay and program it. I am really not looking to spend any more than lets say $30. By the way i just replaced the battery in the remote but the same thing still happens. It's been like this for about a year but it started in the summer so it didn't bother me but now when its 10 degrees F i dont feel like waiting for 1min trying to get the damnn thing to lock. Thanks in advance. Sorry for the long post.

How is the response of locks from the electrical switch inside the cabin?
Also try the spare key remote.

If it is the same for the remote, then the problem is with the actuator. Actuator problem/solution has been discussed [use search].

I am sure its the key 100%. I don't have a second remote key. The actuators are fine. It always locks from the inside door lock button thing. But its just the remote that doesn't work sometimes, when trying to lock it.

I have had the exact same problem with my 1999 RX300 for several years; it now has 175K. I hope you find an inexpensive solution; be sure to share.

Once you weigh the importance of the master key, you might get yourself a spare with new remote.

You can open the key and clean some lint that gathers. Next solution might be a contact cleaner [make sure you give ample time to dry out]

I have tried opening the shell to clean the contacts, but I don't think it can be done; the button mechanism seems to be a sealed unit.

Past the shell you can open to replace the battery. So blasting with contact cleaner may and may not work.

Best advice I can give is get yourself a spare and let this key + remote be your spare.

JAB- It's been over 3 years but I'm sure I took the remote completely apart and cleaned everything thoroughly. I definitely didn't blast it from the battery compartment. I am used to doing things like that though and not sure I would encourage anyone else to. Looked like new when I was done. I have very little fear of anything though. I figure if man made it, I should be able to work on it.

Okay i have successfully cleaned the remote on the key. I opened up the rubber part around the keys and it had collected alot of dust so i used some rubbing alcohol and cleaned it! It works great now. Thanks everyone.

JAB- the unit which you are talking about is sealed but can be easily opened by using a knife or a flat screwdriver thats how i did it. Once you open that part it will show the contacts.

Default Lock button on remote

Just today I was helping another RX owner with lock and remote problems on one he had recently purchased. We did discover that it needs 3 actuators, but when I opened the remote (removed the rubber cover) I discovered that the "Lock" button which is soldered onto the board had come unsoldered, and from all evidences had been for some time. I was able to resolder it but the key needs to be replaced because, though it functions in both lock and unlock, it doesn't operate properly in "Lock". Very tiny solder spots and may have come loose from pressing the "Lock" a little too hard.
