could a faulty 02 sensor contribute to a rough idle and even cause the engine to stall? This just started happening, even tho the CEL has been on for several months. tks

Yeah thats possible,it depends on what is triggering the light to come on. Get the code checked and post on here so we can point you in the right direction.
I would get the read and if there are more than one error code, then clear it. On first re-occurrence of CEL get another read. Dont loose the first read in case things go worse. The reason I suggest the second read is that the system may already be in a corner based on the basic problem and you may have secondary issues being reported in the first read.
I hope this makes sense.

ps: Usually CEL is not catastrophic, but ignoring it is not right. Example, you may loose you cat and the repair cost can snowball. Vehicle is telling you something, do not ignore ... at least get is read and then determine what the risks are.
darn! my code reader is not working! anyhow I cant recall the actually code it was one of the pre cat 02 sensors, (Mill bank something?). I will clean the IACV valve check back. thanks

The code readers can sometimes go haywire. I had an issue with my Actron recently, but it turned out it was a bit dirty on the connection. However, I know others that have had issues as the vehicle has gotten older (or the battery) and have switched to a an OBD2 scanner that has a battery. I plan to get one of those shortly to be able to read other information out of the vehicle.
I've missdiagnosed the issue. It only occurs when the AC is ON. I've posted a new thread. thanks
BTW I did clean the IACV valve but that didnt resolve it.
