Default original brakes

Just want to get a sense of how long the brake pads have lasted for most people? We have around 80K miles on our 99 and it is still on the original pads. I'm tempted to change them out myself but worried that I might screw it up and just not worth the risk. I bought some aftermarket pads that were highly recommended in this forum. Akiano or something like that.

That is indeed lots of miles on original pads. Front for me lasted 60k some miles and the rears about 120k.

I changed the front pads and rotors at around 75k and the rear at 90k.

I have a 2002 RX300 with 72K-mi on the original pads. I plan to check wear in a few weeks, but last I checked, I still had plenty of pad lest.

Yes the originals go a long way. I had around 80k miles and there was still pad left. I changed mine because the idiots at the tire department of Costco warped my disks. replaced the disks with Brembo, and the pads with Akebono, presently I have around 70k on them...still lots of pad left.

Can you guys give percentage of highway driving... anything 70K+ seems a little high if local driving, given the RX's size and "lack of size" on the pads and rotors.

You guys are getting a ton more miles out of them than me. My backs were all the way through to the metal at 60K. Fronts had some pad left but the rotors were warped (they could have been done once but I doubt it, I got the car with 20k on the clock).

Mixed driving but quite a bit of city miles. Never really driven aggressively.

If you have done brakes before you will find them to be very easy to DIY.

I'm not sure on the mileage of my current set, but I know I've been on them since late 2007 (that was back in Mexico and I was still pulling runs at the track all the way into early 2008 before I left) and the pads still have significant pad left and no issues with the rotors (that I had cut around the same time since I last did my pads).

It's hard to screw up on the DIY as long as you have the right tools, https://www.clublexus.com/forums/rx3...-pads-diy.html

Back in Mexico on a set of pads I rarely got 6 months out of the stock pads, but that was a low oxygen environment.

70% short city drives (3miles to work, 3 miles back), the rest highway (wife's car).

For what it's worth I got 96,000 miles from the rear and 108,000 miles from the front brakes on my 2001 BMW 530i. I must drive like an old fart (which I guess I'm rapidly becoming)!

I think in large part, the milage you get out of the brake pads is based on your driving habit. I tend to use the brakes very little because I anticipate when I need to slow down or stop. A friend of mine used to keep speeding knowing there is a stop sign coming up and brakes hard at the last moment. It was just the way he drives.
