Default Gas Cap failed emissions test?!?!?!?

Took in my 2000 RX with 40k mi for PA state inspection and just got a call from the dealer...they said the gas cap failed an emmisions test. wtf. I've never heard of such a thing. Real cheap for a new one, so I'm not that worried about it...but seriously, how often does this happen...especially with a 4 yr old car? Anyone hear of it before?

CA has been doing gas cap pressure tests for years, but I've never had one fail on any of my cars. Sounds a little strange that yours would fail, since it's only 4 years old, but like you said it is a cheap part to replace.

Yep, in Missouri we too have a state inspection where they test the gas cap. If it fails, then you must get it replaced before they will pass your car. Although I am not sure what can fail in a gas cap ,unless it is a seal.

It's rare, but a leaky gas cap could fail your emission test. It could let gas vapor out into the atmosphere, so it's not as unreasonable as it seems.

Not sure if it should be covered by the emission warranty. Check the manual.

Unless the cap is cracked, the only thing that should need changed is the rubber o-ring seal. Of course the whole cap cost more so guess what......................

(They replaced my gas cap too last year!)

Just a guess here, but did the folks doing the inspection just happen to sell gas caps . . . or o-rings? They probably stock them right next to the muffler bearings. . .

That's why I like Florida... no emissions testing.
