Question Service E?

My 99 RX has about 85K miles on it and the service writer recommends service E which includes timing belt, drive belts replacement. The cost for service E is $900.

Should I go to other dealers?

It sounds about right for 90K service at Lexus. You might be able to save a couple hundred dollars by going to a Toyota instead.

I didn't know it was called Service E, but I had my '99 RX done at 60, 000. The cost for it and oil change was $1350!!!

Not to sure of what all is in Service E either. However I would deff. recomend changing the timing belt. It is one belt that could total your engine if it fails. As far pricing goes I know its not a cheap service but if you want to get it done cheap Toyota dealers will best Lexus' price for sure. --Peter

Question

Thanks for all the info.

Any parts should be replaced while doing the 90k service to save some labor cost in the future? Things like water pump ...?

RX has a non-interference engine, so the timing belt will not total your engine as it will in interference engines.

Actually the 1MZ-FE & 3MZ-FE VVT-i models are interference engines. Non VVT-i models are the non interference models.

You had me concerned for a while (you must work for LEXUS), until I found this website which indicates our VVT-i engines are NON interference in fact.

http://www.aa1car.com/library/2003/us70343.htm

Or this site which lists the actual manufacturers and models that are interference/ non-interference engines

Do you have anything indicating that the 1MZ-FE is an interference engine? Everything I can find agrees with the doc above from Fern indicating it is non-interference.

Default Interference rewind

Interference, or not, has reared up again, on this thread https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=159005 is there a definitive answer to this to put it the matter to rest?

It's begining to look like it may be an interference engine. I had 2 articles one a kind of vague article about Honda and Toyota engines and the other a PDF from Gates who manufactures timing belts. Both indicated non-interference. Gates has since modified the PDF on their website indicating interference.

While we stirve to get correct information, keep in mind interfering or non-interfering there is the additonal concern of a breakdown at the wrong time (simple inconvinience to severe-accident).

The last I read about this, was that the VVTi engines were interference, but they have valve reliefs built into the pistons that keep the damage from being quite as catastrophic if the belt fails. They should still be treated as interference engines though.
