Default Engine knock

Recently my vehicle has developed a popcorn popping sound when trying to accelerate. What could be causing it and how can it be fixed?

RX is equipped with engine knock sensors and it adjusts timing to compensate. If it cannot then it will throw a CEL along with a code.

There can be many reasons to hear a knocking sound and the best way to diagnose is to go to a competent mechanic. Usually they diagnose for free or for a fee which can be used towards the repairs.

This is what the tech found. He said: “Your car is running lean which means it’s taking in more air than it should and it’s compensating by using a ton of fuel.”
What's the Lexus part number for the knock sensors? Would it make sense to replace both sensors when the engine cover is opened?

Please look up the DIY sticky thread.

Other than the actual replacement, there are two other test methods.

Actual replacement is pretty intensive 6-8hrs of labor time. Top end has to come off and you would be needing various gaskets.

OEM sensors are not cheap and it is recommended to replace the wire too.

You will need to take the vin to the dealer to get the right sensor.
