Ok so im looking for exhaust on my GS400 and im a little stumped. Right now im just looking to change the mufflers, i was either thinking borla and how many resonators to remove, none, 2, or all 3? Also if i just remove the resonators and leave the stock mufflers will that make any difference? Or sound ok? Let me know your guys opinions.
How loud do you want it to be? I've got Magnaflow mufflers on my 400 with stock piping and it's fairly subtle, no resonance and relatively quiet, more of a purr than a growl but noticeable when you get on it. If you go this route, you can always remove the resonators later to be louder. I've considered it but I'm happy with the way my car sounds for now.
As you noted there are 3 resonators, 2 cats and 2 mufflers. I am calling them resonators since they are straight through internally but the first one is (right after the Y) is packed with absorbsion material so technically it is a muffler just like Borla or Magnaflow or other straight through mufflers.
Modifying the stock exhaust is really all about sound as there is not really any noticable power to be gained in changes. Headers with the stock exhaust work very well and make noticeable power gains with almost no noticeable sound changes. So, as asked by Kyle... how loud do you want it? What are your actual goals? Sound, power, both?

Dont want it annoyingly loud, maybe somewhere along kyles setup. basically just going for sound really and later ill try to squeeze some power out of it with headers, do any of you have a rough estimate of how much? maybe with borlas? flowmasters? and magnaflows? or all three pretty much around the same? thanks again fellas.
Keep an eye out in the classifieds.
I have Borla with 2 resonators deleted. When at idle it almost sounds stock, and sounds good when you get on it.
I would suggest just replacing the muffler and if you still want it louder, then remove the resonators.

That's my thoughts on the process as well for someone who doesn't want a full catback. Also, let the mufflers break in for a bit before you decide whether to remove the resonators.

I paid about $275 for the Magnaflow mufflers with double walled tips; and $60 for the install, welded to the stock piping. I can't comment on the comparison to any of the others since the Magnaflows are all I've had.
I was bored the other day and decided to remove just the stock mufflers and it actually sounds pretty good with them off, bu ti have decided to get some borlas. by the way does anybody know what size the stock piping is? is it 2 1/4?
I would check out borla if you don't want to be to loud, their mufflers have a nice rumble and can definitely make some noise without getting you a ticket
