hey lobux,

I saw your post in this thread https://www.clublexus.com/forums/is-...no-more-4.html (last one) and was wondering if you still recommend against Castrol SYNTEC? Reason I ask is cause I just filled up with that and your post made me a little nervous...

I'll never run it again. I can't really speak to what Castrol has done in the last 16 years with Syntec. It might be completely different than the stuff I ran in my Celica. But, that poor engine never sealed properly and I beat it hard to get it to quit burning oil. It never did. When I got my next car I said never again and haven't looked back. I run Red Line in my Supra and Mobil 1 in the Scion and the F.

What is the difference between 5w30 and 10w30? Would it be fine if I add 5w30 for 1 year and switch over to 10w30?

5w30 usually has a lower pour rate. This means the oil will circulate quicker to the vital components, at start up. Again, 0w30 would be even better. Any of these weights would provide close to the same protection against thermal breakdown (All 30 weight at the hot end). Switching weights will not be a problem.

Well I did a bit more searching online and it seems like Mobil 1 is generally preferred over SYNTEC about 99% of the time.... looks like I'll be having an early oil change.
