You need to stay within the same dimensions if you're going to replace the filter (although you shouldn't need to), bent and ugly = still functional. Remember the SRT ECU is calibrated for that specific filter so going to a larger one will likely give you a check engine light because the air/fuel ratio is off and causing you to run lean/rich.

Not necessarily. The intake pipe is still a 4" pipe. Changing the intake filter (remember it's still only a filtration system) won't change it much if any.

I'd replace it with any one of the 4" filters from K&N. The filter that came with SRT seems like trash.

I agree but the size of the pipe doesn't have any relation to how fast the air runs through it because of the filter. Not trying to say you're wrong because you're not but we did have a local member here go to a larger filter and it caused a CEL for him as the car was running lean. We couldn't figure out what the problem was (over the net) until we saw the car in person and asked him about his 'new' filter. He went back to the regular filter and hasn't mentioned the problem since. So I'm just saying it's possible.

Having the wrong inake filter can give you a CEL. An example would be the earlier production of the Injen intake for the GS300. The filter had too little restriction so the car registered with a 'too lean' code. Injen replaced the filter with a more 'restrictive' filter and the CEL went away.

The intake piping can create a CEL also, even if there is the same amount of volume of air flowing into the engine. Too big of a pipe, you're not getting enough air intake velocity and your MAF will tell the ECU that the engine is choking (ie. not enough air). Both the filter and the piping have correlations. If you're going to change one or the other to something drastically different, at least get an SAFC to tune your A/F curve.

Just throw on a turbo, and a new EMS, and then you won't have to worry about that filter problem.

I like others here am looking for a less expensive, yet equal or better performance intake solution. There's got to be a better way way....the question is which other intake pipe and filter combo will perform best with an SAFC? I like the tuneability aspect of SAFC, especially with other components like plugs and exhaust changes.

I might be more limited due to having a GS3. Any thoughts?

You could use any intake with the SAFC if you want, but you have to get the SAFC tuned and that means dyno's. You probably could get better results than SRT however its probably the only virtually plug and play solution to give you those results. Trust me there is a difference, I just swapped it out for my stock airbox to smog and its quite different.

The filter from SRT is an AFE (Advanced Flow Engineering) filter that is just as good as anything K&N makes, both will work fine but the AFE is SRT "original equipment".
