1UZ to VVTI?
My UZ is crapping out on me, so i'm contemplating swapping for a UZ with VVTI (I own a 93). Its either NA 2jz and do a NA-T setup on it in time, or the 98-00 UZ. My question; would i need to swap anything other than the ecu/motor if I go the UZ route?

It's going to be a bit more guesswork than swapping in a 1JZ or 2JZ engine. The 1UZ VVT-i is a great engine stock but if you're even considering a JZ NA-T as an alternative I would just go that route. It's more than the ECU and engine-- the wiring harness is going to be different since it's an OBDII system going into an OBDI chassis. I can't think of what else needs to be addressed but it will not be simple on the emissions end at least. Add to that, the ECU will be looking for the A650E 5-speed automatic gearbox rather than the four-speed auto you have now. The rear end ratio is also different (3.92 on yours and 3.266 on the VVT-i).
It CAN be done but at such expense it would be a better choice to replace with another non-VVT 1UZ or swap to a JZ series.

It is a tough swap. many have contemplated it, very few have gone through with it that I can't even remember who has done it. na-t or a non vvti 1uz will be better, and in all honesty, the best 1uz's are from 92-94 they are practically bulletproof and the only version that is non-inteference (and you already have one), If I had your motor I would just fix what is wrong I have never heard of one crap out that I couldn't fix with a new coil or cam sensor or ignitor or something usually small. when they run right they run great.
