A friend of mine just pulled out his 04 IS300 tranny and I was wondering if it could be swaped into mine.

I can't guarantee it but I don't see why it wouldn't? It came with a 2JZGE which is the same engine that comes in the 98-00 SC 300 so the transmission should be the same....

Ditto on this. Although I have no proof other than hear say. Word on the vine is that w55 can break on stock power.

Yes, You'll need the complete tranny and the yoke of a 5sp sc. Only the front half.
threshold on the tranny is about 350rwhp and the w58 is about 430rwhp.
3rd gear is the weakest on both. So if you are just wanting to run stock power then you'll be happy with the w55.

If you're referring to the W55 yes you CAN swap it into an SC300 but it's not advisable to even with a stock engine. The W55 bolts up with a dual-mass flywheel design. It is a weaker transmission than the W58 (with a much less costly standard style flywheel) which came in the SC300 from the factory. Gearing is a little different between the two.

The W55 was installed into a 3200lb short wheelbase compact sedan with a 3.70 final drive. The stronger 1992+ steel sandwich plate W58 was installed into a 3500-3600+lb long wheelbase coupe with a 4.08 final drive. The W55 is fine in the IS300 because it's lighter but even in that application some owners have swapped to a W58 for added strength even without turbocharging.

If you're leaving your engine stock and just want a manual the 1992-1994 and 1995-1997 W58 transmission variants are ideal. Personally I recommend keeping your stock 4.27 automatic final drive ratio because it's a responsive combination. You'd use a Yellowbox speedo corrector to make your speedometer accurate.

Crypto,

Both the 1992-1994 and 1995-1997 W58's have the same gear ratios, synchros, bearings, etc.

Both use the same style rubber transmission mount.

The 1995-1997 SC W58 is also 100% the same transmission as the 1993.5-1997 Supra W58.

All SC300 W58's from 1992-1997 came with speedo VSS drives geared for a 4.083:1 final drive ratio. 1993.5-1996 Supra W58's had VSS drives for a 4.272:1 final drive... while 1997 Supra W58's came with a VSS drive for the 4.083:1 final drive ratio. There was no W58 manual option available for 1998 Supra non-turbos.

^^ For speedometer accuracy correction there is a device called a Yellr Yellowbox which handily corrects any issues. This company also sells an SC/MKIV compatible plug and play harness for their device.

Most importantly, the 1992-1994 SC300 W58's used a "top loader" style extension housing and "swan" shifter setup.

The 1995-1997 SC300 W58's and 1993.5-1997 Supra W58's all used a "tripod" style shifter similar to how V160's, V161's and later model R154's were configured. This means that if you have an original 5-speed SC300 made from 1992-1994 the transmission tunnel top shifter opening will be different from the one found in the 1995-1997 SC300 5-speed and all manual MKIV Supras.

All SC300 W58 front driveshafts are the same. All W58's use the same flywheels and clutch kits.

The W58's that differ very significantly are the earlier versions found in the Supra MKII, Supra MKIII and early manual Cressidas. Same transmission except that they are notably weaker internally and use an aluminum rather than steel center sandwich plate. The bellhousings on these early W58's, while swappable, also are for Toyota "M" engines and not "JZ" engines. Also all of those use the "top loader" shifter setup but do not have the longer shifter extension housings found on the SC300 W58's. Also the rubber transmission mount affixing points on the tail housings are not the same as on the SC300 and MKIV W58's (which would require an MKIII R154 style transmission mount with a custom or aftermarket crossmember). As such these early style W58's are good for other lighter weight classic Toyota applications but are not considered ideal or worthwhile for an SC manual swap.
