NO! the SC300 uses the W58 tranny in the 5speed, whereas the IS300 uses the W55, which is not as strong from what i hear. a common swap for the turbo IS guys is the W58 out of the SC. it has been proven to hold over 500WHP. hope this helps.

actually... the SC's stock W58 has been known to blow out at as little as 300ish RWHP and hold up as high as 500RWHP

I think its more or less the torque that kills it.

I've seen quite a few W58s go from as little as 350ft-lbs of torque. The IS300 W55 is even weaker than that. Though the W55 from the 22R-based toyota trucks is supposedly a lot stronger internally (and can be had for dirt cheap)

actually, i have seen an SC running the W58 with over 500HP at the wheels. if you dont slam the gears, it will last. numerous 12 second passes and countless dyno runs and it worked fine. now no more back talk out of you

umm?

what?

the IS guyes don't swap the W58 in sorry

if anything they do a R154 or the GETRAG
but they don't do the W58 swap...

The IS300 5 speed has a weak 3rd gear that likes to shatter.

haha, actually, a friend here in town swapped in a W58 in favor of his W55 due to the fact that it is stronger, and more cost effective than the 6speed. his turbo IS dynoed at over 500HP.

With all due respect ki_soarer, you are a newbie on this forum still comparatively speaking and you havent seen the amount of turbocharged SC300s blowing their W58s... There are few people that were around during that age. You werent around during the Toyomoto days.... when it was fmax vs toyomoto and thats all there was. MANY MANY people destroyed their W58s... destroyed them several times, and promptly swapped in a V160 and never broke those. Most of those people don't post much anymore (CmpterWiz died, God rest his soul). Only one still around much that still posts at all is SC300TURBO and he will tell you the same thing about this transmission.

it might have held 500whp fine on 1 car by barely driving it, shifting slowly, etc... but 'proven to hold 500whp' means you can drive it like a normal car and push it without it exploding... the W58 won't do that. period.

So he dynoed over 500whp right? Can you show us the dynosheet? And you're telling me he drag races it, drives it hard with top gear pulls and everything? I dont see that happening. Another thing to consider also is the IS300 weighs about 500lbs less and puts less wear on that transmission... but regardless... 500-ft-lbs of torque will kill the transmission.

And I know you didnt mean to say that the W58 is stronger than the V160 right?

first off, i was arround for the whole f-max vs. toyomoto crap. i remember posts my computerwiz, and i remember when he passed. i have been posting since 03, but i was browsing the forums long before.

the SC that im talking about that ran the W58 is another member on the forum. everyone that has been here for a while has seen dyno sheets and timeslips of his car using the W58. he drives the car daily, and when i say drives... he really drives it. eventually it did break. im not saying its better than the V160... that is what he is running now. im not stupid, im just saying its not a horrible tranny. believe me, i would much rather have either the R154, or the V160 over the W58, but that does not mean its crap.
as for the IS... i was just proving that there are guys that use the W58 in them. i could probably get a dyno sheet from him. he has not taken it to the track, and i dont know if he plans to.

Is the R154 tranny really worth swapping in, I mean how much abuse and power can they take compared to the V160? I am in the proccess of building my NA-T w/ goals upward of 600WHP and for me money does not grow on trees, so would the R154 be up to the task?

Never meant to insult your intelligence, I know you're a bright guy

And yeah I never argued the point that IS3 guys used the W58, because I know thats true, I've seen it done a few times, quite an easy swap IIRC. Uses just a different tranny, but the same bellhousing, tailshft, etc

I know who it is that ran that much power through his W58, and it does hold it; but he doesnt drive it hard either... from what I gathered.

Again, never meant to insult you, I know you're not stupid.
