Will the dealer replace with a spin on filter if you ask? That seems to be most peoples preference when doing it themselves.
For the 1st gen NX's, a spin-in filter adaptor is required to go this route. I've seen a few of these adaptors, and aside from the cost aspect, I've also read about multiple issues with these adaptors. I can't justify spending $300+ on something that carries a higher risk than reward.
I've upgraded mine to the OEM metal housing (I don't understand why Lexus/Toyota would use a plastic housing when it's going to go through many many heat cycles), but the process is still the same and a pain in the @$$.

I had the canister style oil filter on my RX, it was a PITA. It is supposed to have a cap that is removed then use a little plastic tool to drain the oil from the canister so it can be removed mess free. NEVER happened, the cap never came off without a huge effort. Through several oil changes trying to make sense of how to make this easy peasy, trying to barely tighten the cap, etc... I gave up, just loosen the entire canister, let it make a big mess, then finish removing. The spin-on for the 2gen NX is so easy. Yea, its horizontal mount so it does make a bit of a mess, but not much, it is easy peasy!

I never remove the bottom cap and just take the entire canister out. I've heard too many stories of where people shove the plaster drain tool with too much pressure and message up the drain valve in the process. I have noticed that if I unscrew the canister slowly and tilt it at an angle, yes it's still messy but less of the oil going everywhere.
All of my cars (minus the Lexus) have the horizontal mount for the filter, and will take this design any day lol.
