Those are directions for when you are actively following a planned route using the navigation for directions. I'm getting the pop-up when I'm not using the navigation at all.

I still have the digital owners manual for my old '20 NX downloaded and under Detailed Navigation settings there should be a setting for "Automatic Freeway Exit List" that you can turn off. Unless that's a '20 and up feature.

OP, adding Carplay to your 2018 NX will add the feature to turn off the "Automatic Freeway Exit List".

It also added the ability to turn off "Automatic Freeway Exit List".

My car is a 2019 and HAS Apple CarPlay. It does not however, have the ability to turn the freeway exit off in the Detailed Navigation Settings.

Apparently early build 2019 models are screwed as far as turning this stupid feature off.

Have you updated the firmware?

Here's the reply I got from Lexus Corporate on this issue:

Thank you for contacting Lexus about the navigation mapping design and vehicle odor concern you are experiencing on your 2019 NX 300.

Lexus researches the market by conducting interviews, issuing surveys, and convening focus groups, but the best insights come from vehicle owners—like you—who take time to share their real-world experiences in an effort to place the highest quality vehicles possible on the road. However, there is no better source than a vehicle owner who takes time to share valid insight.

Lexus has brought the Freeway Guidance Screen disable feature back to the current models. That function was not an option on your model year NX 300. With regard to Apple CarPlay, this will not bring the Freeway Guidance Screen disable option back in vehicles, as this option is part of the mapping design. The Apple CarPlay retrofit for eligible vehicles only allows the vehicle to interact with the Apple CarPlay program features.
