Red face 94-LS400-Tranny-hiccups

My 1994 LS400 has 261,000 miles and runs fine except it has started making a CLUNKING sound and jolt when going from Park to Drive.
No transmission fluid leaks. Tranny also makes clunking noise when downshifting on freeway in heavy stop'n go traffic.
Any ideas, comments or suggestions are welcome!

If its one clunk when it just shifts gears, could be your engine mounts.

Sounds like a bad U-joint to me.

Motor mounts are relatively "new", replaced several years ago. Another member suggested it could be U-joint problem.
Whatever it is, there's a bit of lag between shifting from P to R or P to D before the jolt/clunk that's accompanies by
a sudden surge/motion of the car either backward or forward. A bad U-joint (with too much play) seems like it might
cause this behavior.

Thanks for your comments!

The transmission support is also another part that is common to replace. We don't see many drive shaft issues but they do come up. Basically any rubber dampening part at this age may be a factor to inspect. There are also instances of the shift solenoids needing to be replaced.
