Im wondering if my mounts are shot. My mechanic said they were shot and could tell due to a creaking sound when I rev the engine and let go in neutral or park. Once the revs hit low levels, theres a creaking/whirring noise from the engine. It only happens in neutral too.

To the eye, they look fine.

Alot of bushings, mounts, and otherwise 'soft tissue' for a car in its joints/braces can look perfectly fine until removed. I don't think it unreasonable to assume your motor mounts and transmission mount are in bad shape after 18 years.

Never know though, they could be fine.. but I would go ahead and swap the motor mounts and tranny mount. Relatively easy job for a mechanic and parts are again, relatively, cheap.

Cheaper than a brake job or set of tires.
