Default Oil filter lowdown 20004 vs YZZB5

I just got tired of the confusion surrounding the Toyota oil filters 90915-20004 and the 90915-YZZB5. I decided to check it out myself. First of all, both ARE made in Japan. The 20004 is slightly taller (maybe 1/4", just guessing).

The 20004 is more expensive and I have found the reason. Although they appear to have the same filter material. The 20004 has 12 "pleats" and the YZZB5 has only "9". I'm not talking about the pleats like in a paper filter, these are orange and solid. There is more filtering capacity in the 20004 because there is more filter material. The rubber gasket under the filter material and inside the filter itself is much more pliable in the 20004. I can feel the difference with my finger when I bend it.

Now for the bigggest point. The one issue that brings out the biggest debate. What about the bypass valve? The 20004 has one and the YZZB5 DOES NOT! I am looking at them both and the top of the filter material in the YZZB5 is completely solid. THe top end of the filter material in the 20004 has this round metal "plug-looking" thing with a weird looking snap ring thing along with that piece of metal that looks like an "H" with a hole in the middle. I don't know how to do pictures. You can find pictures of the 20004 on this site. That's what it looks like. THe YZZB5 DOES NOT have a bypass valve of any sort.

NOw if I could only get my $13 back. $5 for the YZZB5 and $8 for the 20004. I accept PayPal

thanks for the comparison. i just had a 20004 (v8 one, right?) in my ES300 (v6). thanks much in part to the fabulous secret oil i was using, the engine was very much noticeably smoother. too bad i can't give the filter credit for it though...it's not like you pop in a new oil filter and say "ahhh, now this filter, i *like*". no way of proving the filter made my engine smoother. poor oil filter.
