Default GS400 Oil Filter

I have a 1999 GS4 and just got a filter from Bay Ridge Lexus (yeah yeah, everyone tells me never to go there), but I'm just there for an oil filter. Nothing should go wrong right? WRONG!!!!

I didn't open the filter until I got home. They gave me this POS. Has anyone ever seen anything like this? It looks like a damn FRAM filter!!!!

I know this topic has been discussed many times before. Here's an excellent thread on THIS TOPIC , but the model of this Toyota/Denso filter that I got is:

90915-YZZD3 (made in Thailand). WHICH I PAID $13 FOR!!!!!!!!!!

Everyone seems to recommend this Toyota/Denso filter:
90915-20004-Lexus V-8 filter (made in Japan)

And as a second alternative:
90915-YZZB5-Toyota V-8 filter (also made in Japan)

Everyone seems to be avoiding the USA made Denso filters. BUT has anyone heard of this "made in Thailand" filter? It really looks crappy.

Here are 2 pics:

Here's another angle. Made by FRAM?

I remember being really impressed by the oil filter that member "SC300Es" was using when we did our oil change together.

At that time, I didn't have my GS yet. I was changing the oil on my Honda. Here are some pics of the filter that I was impressed with (looks high-tech to me).

When compared with my Honda filter, the Toyota filter looks like its quality is much better.

Because of the crappy filter that I got, I'm not going to change my oil yet. I'm going to try to get my hands on the Japan 20004 filter and return this crappy Thailand YZZD3 one.

I'm assuming Carson Toyota carry the 20004 filters right?

About 2 months ago, I ordered a case of (10) 90915-20004 Japanese oil filters for $69.50--give Carson Toyota a call. . .

I ordered the same thing online. When I checked the filter, it's made in Thailand and it looks exactly the same as yours.

I paid about $4.50 for that filter but $13 seems too much.

BTW, anyone experienced any different between the Thailand one and the Japan one?

I called Carson yesterday and put in an order of a couple of items which included 10 Oil filters @ $6.99 each

Does the 20004 filters (made in Japan) look similar to the one that SC300Es used (the YZZB9) in the pics above?

bx167, I just don't like the way the Thailand filter looks. It looks like a cheap FRAM that you can get at Pep Boys for $3.99.

Has anyone ever cut the Thailand filters open to compare with the 20004 or YZZB5 filters?

the Thai filter is fine, i have pictures on another forum, the Gen[M]ay automotive forums....

BTW, if you must insist on the 90915-20004 or 90915-YZZB5, check your local Toyota dealer, they may have some on the back shelf.

The Thailand filter is a Denso design: http://www.saber.net/~monarch/oilfilD3.JPG and it's a Toyota tested and approved filter. What could be better than that?? Yeah, the oil filter study websites think it's a cheap design, but what do they know?? Do any of these "oil filter study"
websites really educate the public about is how well different filters perform in a Toyota operating in the real world? They sure don't.

To understand how off base these "oil filter study" websites can be consider how poorly they rate the USA made Toyota 08911-02011 filter (it's the filter Toyota /Lexus uses in the Camry, ES300 & RX300 V6 and Toyota Truck V6 & 4 cyl engines) Yet I've been using this 08911-02011 filter for over 437,000 miles on a '92 4 cylinder Toyota pickup and the engine still runs like new with like new compression on all cylinders http://www.saber.net/~monarch/437.jpg So obviously this 08911-02011 filter has been doing an outstanding job of protecting the engine against wear.
